New admits to the ICU/RC

BEATRICE

She is 8 months old and weighs 7 pounds.  She was admitted with a 105 temp, diarrhea, vomiting  and was in distress.  She was referred to us from Children’s Health Ministries.  She has 1 living sister at home.  Her mama and papa both buy items in bulk and resells them for a profit.  They also have gardens that produce beans and corn.  The family lives in a 3 room home made of block and tin.  They do not have running water in their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse.  They get their water from a piped system that is about a 15 minute walk from their homes.  Her mama stopped breastfeeding her about a month ago because she had a fever and thought she would made Beatrice sick as well.  They have been feeding her spaghetti and soup since then.  They traveled 5 hours by motorcycle and taxi to arrive at the clinic.  The families average monthly income is around $35US.  She was given medication and started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

JAMESLY

He is 3 years old and weighs 18 pounds.  He had been following in our outpatient medika mamba program and was not improving but getting worse and was admitted into inpatient care. His parent are both farmers and grow corn and grain in their gardens.  The family of 4 lives in a 1 room home made of rocks, clay and tin.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse.  They get their water from a source that is a 1 hour one way walk from their home.  His diet is one plate of rice a day.  That is it.  This is his first time with kwashiorkor so we are hopeful that he will recover.  The families average monthly income is $68US.  He was started on the F-75 milk therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

JESSICA

She is 21 months old and weighed 11 pounds at her lowest weight.  She was referred to us by Children’s Health Ministries.  Her mama has been to several other hospital near her home.  They all gave her prescriptions and ordered test.  She would buy the meds that she could afford and then did not have money to get the blood test done.  When her mama sat in the chair to be seen she just started crying and was so sad that her daughter was so sick.  The family of 6 lives in a 1 room home that they rent.  They do not have running water in their home, but do have a flush toilet.  They buy their water from a place that is about a 30 minute walk from their home. Her papa is a teacher and her mama buy and resells items for a profit.  She was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to medika mamba.

JETLIE

She is 4 years old and weighs 22 pounds.  She was referred to us by Children’s Lifeline Ministries.  She was admitted with a fever, pneumonia, coughing and kwashiorkor.  Her papa is a farmer and her mama sews clothing.  She comes from a family of 10 children, 5 of those have died.  The family lives in a 2 room home made of rocks, clay and tin.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse.  There is not a water source in the village and they walk 3hrs to get clean water to drink.  Her mama also told us that she goes for days at a time without eating and just wants water to drink. The families average monthly income is $11us per month.  She was started on medications and the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

 JONELSON

He is 3 years old and weighs 19 pounds.  He was admitted with a fever and kwashiorkor.  His papa is a taxi driver and his mama buys and resells items for a profit.  He has 7 living siblings and 3 that have died.  The family of 9 lives in a 2 room home made of bricks, clay and tin.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse.  There is a truck full of water that comes to the village each day.  They take their buckets to the truck and purchase water from the truck.  The day he was admitted he had a banana and the day before a plate of spaghetti.  It took his parents 2 hours to arrive at the clinic by motorcycle.  The families average monthly income is around $11US.  He was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then slowly graduated to the medika mamba program.

CLAUDENA

She is 2 years old and weighs 23 pounds.  She has kwashiorkor, fever, and lots of open sore of her skin.  Her mama died about 1 year ago and her papa has been raising her since then.  He is a farmer and grows corn and beans in his gardens.  The average monthly income for the family is $11US.  The family of 7 lives in a 3 room home made of rocks, tin and clay.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse.  They get their water from a source that is about 30 minute walk from their home. The day she was admitted and the day before all she had was juice to drink and no food.  She was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.
