New admits to the ICU/RC

ANGEL    

He is 18 months old and weighs 15 pounds 8 ounces.  For the past month he has had fever and began showing signs of kwashiorkor (mild swelling in his feet) 7 days ago.  He has 2 siblings at home, a brother and a sister.  He lives in a 3 room home with 10 people.  The house in made of tin, rocks and clay.  They do not have running water in their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse.  They get their water from a piped water source that is near their home and a river that is not far away.  His papa is a farmer and grows bananas.  Angel’s mama buys items in bulk and resells them to make a profit. The day he was admitted he has a bowl of soup to eat and the day before a plate of rice. The families average monthly income is around $113US.  When we asked the mama what she thought caused the malnutrition she said they did not have enough food for everyone to eat.  He was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

MAYKENLEY

He is 12 months old and weighs 16 pounds 8 ounces.  He was referred to us from  Children’s Lifeline.  He was admitted for severe dehydration and malnutrition.  He was also admitted with a 102 temp, diarrhea and mild kwashiorkor.  He lives in a 3 room home with 5 other family members.  The home is made of rocks, tin and clay.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse.  The day he was admitted he had not had anything to eat and the day before he has some juice.  He mama left him on the porch of the papa’s house and an aunt brought him to the clinic. He was started on the F-75 therauptic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

WIDELOVE

He is 4 years old and weighs 21 pounds.  He was admitted with kwashiorkor, fever and diarrhea.  He lives in a rented  home with his 3 siblings and his mama.  His papa is a farmer and grows corn, beans and bananas. The day he was admitted he had a plate of rice to eat.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse. They get their water from a hand pump that is about 10 minutes from their home. The families average monthly income is around $102.  It took his mama 1 hour to arrive here by motocycle.  She believes that his father is trying to kill Widelove (by a curse) and that is why he is so sick.   He was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

WALNEY

He is 16 months old and weighs 14 pounds.  He was referred to us by Childrens Health Ministries.  He was admitted with kwashiorkor, rash and a cold.  He lives in a home made of rocks, tin and cement, with 6 family members. They do not  have running water at their home, or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse.  They get their water from a piped source that is about a 10 minute walk from their home.  His mama died and his papa has been taking care of him. He dad works in his garden and grows grains and beans.  The families average monthly income is around $90.  The papa believes his child is this way because he does not have enough food to feed him.  He was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

MAYCO

He is 10 months old and weighs 11 pounds.  He was referred to us by Children’s  Lifeline.  Mayco was born in the Dominican Republic and has just been back in Haiti for a few months with his mother.  He was admitted with severe dehydration diarrhea and fever.  He lives in a one room home with his mama and siblings.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, but do have an  outhouse.  His papa is a farmer and grows banana, beans and corn in his garden.  The day he was admitted he had juice to drink and the day before 1 jar of baby food.  The families average monthly income is $113.  It took the family 1.5 hours to arrive here by motorcycle and taxi. he mama believes that he has become this ill due to diarrhea.   He was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

VANESSA

He is 4 years old and weighed 38 pounds when admitted.  He has since lost 9 pounds of water weight from his kwashiorkor.  His family of 4 lives in a 2 room home made of rocks, clay and brush.   His parents are farmers and grow corn in their gardens.  The family does not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse.  There is a source that is about a 15 minute walk from their home where they can find water.  The day before he was admitted he had a plate of spaghetti and the day admitted he has a plate of rice.  This is his first time with kwashiorkor.  The families average monthly income is $6US.  It took them 2 hours by motorcycle to arrive at the clinic.  He mama has no idea how he got this sick. He was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

TISINE

He is 2 1/2 yrs old and weighs 20 pounds 8 ounces.  He was in the outpatient medika mamba program and stopped coming in July.  He increasing got worse at home and his mama brought him for inpatient care in August.  There are 12 living children in his family and 2 that have died.  The family lives in a 1 room home that they rent.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse.  The family gets their water from a piped water source that is just a few minutes from their home.  The day he was admitted he had a banana and a piece of bread, the day before a banana and juice.  The families average monthly income is around $56US.  He lives right here in the village of Cazale so  it was just a short walk for them to get here. His mama believes that he became this malnourished because he does not want to eat.   He was started of the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

LUCKSON

He is 3 years old and weighed 22 pounds when admitted he has since lost 4 pounds of water weight from kwashiorkor.  He was in the outpatient medika mamba program for 2 weeks and increasing got worse.  He refused to eat the mamba and he had to have an NG tube for several days until he got his appetite back to begin eating again.  He also had a temp of 104 when admitted.  The family of 7 lives in a 1 room home made of rocks, tin and clay.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse.  Both of his parents are farmers and grow beans and corn in their gardens.  The families average monthly income is $113US.  His mama believes that he is malnourished because he has worms.  They traveled 3 hours by motorcycle to arrive at the clinic.  He was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the meidka mamba program.

GINET

He is 13 months old and weighs 15 pounds.  He was in our outpatient medika mamba program and became increasingly worse and was then admitted into the inpatient program.  The day he was admitted he had a glass of milk and the day before he has nothing to eat.  He mama died when he was 9 months old. Since then his papa has been caring for him.  His papa is a farmer and grows corn and beans in his gardens. The family of 3 lives in a 2 room home made of rocks, mud and brush.  They do not have running water in their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse.  They get their water from a source that is about a 10 minute walk from their home.   The families average monthly income is around $22US. Ginet and his papa traveled 6 hours by foot to arrive at the clinic.  He papa thinks  that he has become this malnourished because he will not eat.  He was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.
