New Admits

Fakensley is 14 months old. He lives with both of his parents and one sibling in a one-room house made of block and tin. They have a small outhouse. They buy their water and store it in buckets. Their diet consists mostly of rice and legume (cooked vegetable mush). His father sells minutes for phones and his mother buys and sells goods at the market to help provide a source of income.

Fakensley was referred from Children’s Health Ministries with severe acute malnutrition. He also had sores on his skin and in his mouth. His father said he had a poor appetite for about two weeks.  Fakensley weighed 13.6 pounds, and was running a mild fever when he was admitted to the ICU.

Peterson is 9 years old. He lives with his mother and two siblings in a 1 room block and tin house. They have a small out house. The mother does not work and stays home to care for the children. Their diet consists mostly of rice and legume (cooked vegetable mush).  His father left before he was born and is not involved in his life.

Peterson’s history is unclear. He is unable to speak, walk or sit up. His mother claims he was once able to talk, run and play but that he began having seizures and that he became unable to walk and talk after. His mother tells us he refuses to eat anything she tries to feed him. Peterson weighed 28.6 pounds and had swelling in the feet and legs from severe malnutrition.

Gladimyr is 20 months old. He lives with both of his parents and one sibling in a two- room house made of rocks, clay and tin. They have a small out house.  They must walk thirty minutes each way to the nearest water source. The father is a farmer and grows beans and corn to feed his family and to provide a source of income. The mother buys and sells goods at the market to help provide for the family. Their diet consists mostly of beans, corn and plantains.

Gladimyr was an outpatient on medika mamba for a moth before being admitted because he refused to eat the mamba. His parents report symptoms of diarrhea and poor appetite beginning about 3 months ago. He is able to walk, but has not walked for several days and speaks very few words such as “mama” and “papa”. Gladimyr weighed 16.7 pounds and had swelling of his feet and legs from the malnutrition when he was admitted.

Christelle is 25 months old and was referred to us by Children’s Health Ministries. She lives with her mother, her mothers’ boyfriend and 1 sister. They live in a one-room house made of cement, rocks and tin and have a small outhouse. Their only source of water is a river they must walk to and fetch water from. She is able to walk but does not speak yet. The mother reports she has had some vaccines.

Their diet consists mainly of rice, bean sauce and legumes.  She was admitted to ICU after she was brought in to the clinic with swelling of the feet, legs and hands. Christelle weighed 18.3 pounds when she came into the clinic.
