New admits to the ICU/RC

CYNEXIL

He is 2 1/2 years old and weighs 20 pounds.  He was referred to us from Bread to the Nations.  He is in the beginning stages of kwashiorkor and has swelling in his feet and legs.  He failed an appetite test and also had a fever when admitted.  The family of 8 lives in a 2 room tent. They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse.  They buy their water from a local business that is about a 5 minute walk from their home. The day he was admitted he had not had anything to eat and the day before had a plate of rice.  It took them about 5 hours to get here by car and moto. The families average monthly income is about $60US.  He was started on the F-75 milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

DANEIKA

She is 3 years old and weighs 22 pounds.  Both of her parents were found dead in their bed one morning.  Daneika’s aunt traveled from about 3 hours away by taxi to get here.  She went to several clinic’s by her home but the doctors told her the child did not have a sickness that needed medicine and she just needed to feed her.  Daneika lives with her extended family of 8 in a one room home.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even and outhouse.  They get their water from an irrigation system for crops that is about a 10 minute walk from their home.  She has been having signs of malnutrition and kwashiorkor for about 1 month now.  The first thing her aunt noticed was her hair falling out and then the swelling began.  The family has an average monthly income of $60US a month.  She was started on the F-75 milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

She is 8 months old and weighs 11 1/2 pounds.  She was referred to us from Bread to the Nations.  She comes from a family of 8 siblings.  The family of 10 lives in a 1 room home made from wood and tin.  She has been sick for about 2 months now with vomiting and diarrhea.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse.  They buy their water from a local business that is about a 10 minute walk from their home.  The day she was admitted she has ate a jar of baby food and the day before some soup.  She was started on the F-75 milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

FRANCELINE

She is 2 years old and weighs 16 pounds.  She has been living with her mama for the past year.  Her mama recently took her to the papa’s house ans dropped her off and did not return.  She has some special needs and is currently unable to crawl or walk.  The family of 3 lives in a 2 room home make of block, cement and tin.  The papa is a farmer and grows beans in his fields.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse. They get their water from a river that is about a 30 minute walk from their home.  The day she was admitted she ate a pack of cookies and the day before had a bowl of soup.  They came from a new village that we have not heard of before.  It took them 11 hours to get to the clinic by foot and moto. She was started on the F-75 milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

FEDELINE

She is 15 months old and weighs 14 pounds 6 ounces. She was referred to us from Bread to the Nations.  Both of her parents are living.  Her father builds houses and her mother buys items in bulk and then resells them for a profit.  The family of 5 lives in a 1 room home made of block, cement and tin.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse. There is a piped water system that is just a few minutes from their home where they get their water.  Her mother stopped breastfeeding her when she was about 11 months old.  Since then she has been losing weight and not eating well.  She has had diarrhea for about a week.  The day she was admitted she had a pack of cracker and the day before a plate of rice to eat.  She was started on the F-75 milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

MIKA

She is 4 years old and weighs 30 pounds.  She was referred to us from Bread to the Nations.  We do not have a lot of information on her case.  She was sent with an aunt to the clinic.  She has been sick with malnutrition for several months and began having signs of kwashiorkor within the last 2 weeks.  She was started in the F-75 milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

ROSE NAIKA

She is 10 months old and weighs 9 pounds 6 ounces.  Her mother was a patient here at RHFH when she was a new born.  She made a full recovery while here and returned home.  She quite taking her medications and died a month later.  Rose-Naika has been following in the clinic since then with her papa.  This past month she began showing sign of kwashiorkor and severe malnutrition.  She was admitted then for inpatient care. She comes from a family of 12 siblings.  Three of those children died when they were babies.  Her father is a farmer and grows beans and corn in his gardens.  The family of 10 lives in a 4 room home made of rocks, clay and tin.  They do not have running water in their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse.  They get their water from a source that is a 30 minute walk from their home. The day she was admitted she had not had anything to eat and the day before she has a glass of milk. It took her papa and aunt 5 hours to get here from their home.  The papa’s average monthly income is about $118US.  We have found that babies with kwashiorkor have a much higher death rate that those that are a bit older.  She is in a critical stage right now and we are all hopeful that she will recover.  She was started on the F-75 milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

ROSE LIENDA

She is 14 months old and weighs 12 pounds.  Her mama left her at her papa’s house a few months ago.  Her papa is a fisherman.  Rose-Lineda and her papa live in a one room home that he rents.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse.  They get their water from a hand pump that is about 2 minutes from their home.  The papa brings in an average of  $35US per month.  It took them about three hours to get here by taxi and moto.  Her papa thinks Rose lineda is malnourished because no one has time to take care of her.  She was stared in the F-75 milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

STEPHANIE

She is 10 months old and weighs 10 pounds.  She was referred to us from Danita’s Children.  For the past 6 months she has been having diarrhea that has been increasing getting worse.  Since then she has been losing weight and declining in her health.  She and her mama along with staff from the mission made the long trip here in search of help for little Stephanie.  The family of 4 lives in 1 room place that they rent.  They do not have running water at the home but get their water from a source that is about a 2 minute walk from their home.  She was started on IV fluids and F-75 milk when she arrived and then graduated to the medika mamba program.
