New admits to the Rescue Center

JUNIOR

He is 5 years old and weighs 30 pounds.  His family has had some drastic changes in the past few months. Their gardens are failing and they do not have enough money to purchase food for everyone.  Junior has been showing beginning signs of kwashiorkor (swelling in feet and legs) for about a week now.  He also had diarrhea, fever and a cold.  He refused to eat medika mamba for his mom but has been eating it fine here.  His mama is also 9 months pregnant and they walked 3 hours to arrive at the clinic. We were concerned that she would not be able to come for weekly appointments in the outpatient program so we all decided that the inpatient program would be a good fit for him.  His parents are both farmers and grow beans and corn in their gardens.  The family of 6 lives in a 4 room home made of rocks, clay and tin.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse.  They get their water from a source that is about a 5 minute walk from their home.  The day he was admitted he had nothing to eat and the day before he had a bowl of stew.  He was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

WISLIE

She is  1 1/2 years old and weighs 19 pounds 13 ounces.  She has severe kwashiorkor (general edema all over body), as you can see he feet have begun to split open due to the swelling.  Her papa died a few months ago leaving her and her 3 siblings without much of an income for the family.  Her mama left the kids with grandma and went to find work in a bigger town.  She was only gone a few months and when she return found her daughter this sick.  It was been a very hard year for the whole family.  The day she was admitted she had nothing to eat and the day before bread soup.  They traveled 1 1/2 hours by motorcycle to arrive at the clinic. She was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.
