New admits to the Rescue Center

BENITA

She is 17 months old and weighs 21 pounds.  She was left at home with another sibling for several days with no parents home.  Everyone was hungry and they were trying to make food on an open fire.  Benita fell backwards into the fire and burnt the back of her head.  The parents did not return for several days and it was very infected when she arrived at the clinic.  Since the family walked 6 hours down from their mountain home, we thought inpatient care was the best option for her to be able to receive daily dressing changes.  She has 7 living siblings and 2 that have died.  Her parents are both farmers and grow corn, beans and grains in their gardens.  The family lives in a 2 room home made of tin, rocks and dirt.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet not even outhouse.  The nearest source of water to their home is a 2 hour walk 1 way.  She is doing well and getting daily dressing changes.

She is 4 ½ years old and weighed 29 pounds when first admitted, she has lost 3 pounds so far from her edema from her kwashiorkor.  This is her 3rd time with kwashiorkor and she was also admitted with a 103 fever.   She has 2 living siblings at home and 2 that have died-both from fevers.  Her parents are both farmers and grow bean, corn and grains in their gardens.  The family lives in a 2 room home made of sticks, clay and tin.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse.  The family traveled 2 hours by motorcycle to arrive at the clinic.  The day she was admitted she had a plate of rice to eat and the day before some boiled bananas.  She was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.
