New admits to the Rescue Center

HERVELANDE

She is 6 years old and weighed 28 pounds when admitted.  She has lost 4 pounds of water weight so far from her edema from the kwashirokor (this is the 7th time with kwashiorkor).  Her family traveled 4 hours by foot, taxi and motorcycle to arrive at the clinic.  She had a temp of 102 when admitted, diarrhea and vomiting.  Her parents are both farmers and grow beans, corn and pumpkins in their gardens.  The family of 6 lives in a 2 room home made of rocks, tin and cement.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse.  The day she was admitted she had nothing to eat and the day before some soup. She was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

ISLA

She is 6 months old and weighs 10 pounds.  She was referred to us from Children’s Health Ministries.  She was admitted with kwashiorkor, vomiting and diarrhea.  Her mama stopped breastfeeding her when she was 2 months old.  She said that she was sick and a doctor told her to not breastfeed her daughter.  She did not have enough money to buy formula for her and she began losing weight.  A few weeks ago she began showing signs of kwashiorkor.  She has 7 living siblings and 2 that died when they were newborns.  Her papa builds houses and her mama buys items in bulk and resells them for a profit.  The family of 9 lives in a 1 room home made of cinder block, tin and cement.  The do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse.  They purchase their water from a vendor that is near their home. They traveled 4 hours by motorcycle and taxi to arrive at the clinic.

MANOUCHECA and MICHELINE

Manoucheca is 3 months old and weighs 4 pounds 8 ounces.  She was severely dehydrated and had kwashiorkor when admitted.  Her mama is staying with her during her time over recovery.  She has lost one other child when it was a newborn and has one other living child.  She does not have a home to live in and stays with friends.  Manoucheca also had a 101 temp and diarrhea when admitted.  We are working with her mama to help her be able to breastfeed well and are hopefully that she will recover.

CAVENDY

He is 4 1/2 years old and weighed 23 pounds when admitted.  He currently has lost 4 pounds of water weight from his edema caused by his kwashiorkor.  He had another sibling in the Rescue Center several years ago that is doing well at home and is maintaining their weight and health.  His papa sat down with our nurses and said before we saw his son he wanted to ask Jesus to forgive him and give his life back to Christ. He had been going to church and doing well but for the past few years had not been living well.  He has 4 living children and 3 that have died, with fever and/or diarrhea.  The family lives in a 2 room home made of rocks, clay and tin.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse. They get their water from a source that is about a 10 minute walk fomm their home. The day he was admitted he had nothing to eat and the day before he has a plate of rice.  he was started in the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.
