New admits to the Rescue Center

JN DANIEL

He is 15 months old and weighs 14 pounds. His papa died and his mama left him with the papa’s family when he was a baby.  They have tried to locate her but have been unable to find her for months.  He was being carried for by an aunt but she tells us that he has been getting smaller and sicker in the last 5 months.  There are 3 other children as well and the papa’s side of the family is doing their best to care for them, they are all older than Jn Daniel.  The family lives in a 3 room home made of block and tin.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse.  They buy their water from a vender that lives near their home.  The family also has gardens where they grow bananas, beans and corn.  He has had a cough and diarrhea for about a month now.  The day he was admitted he had not had anything to eat and the day before has oatmeal and rice.  In his short life he has had kwashiorkor 3 times.  The family’s average monthly income is around $136US.  They traveled 1 hour to the clinic by taxi and motorcycle.  He was started on F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

BERLANDA

She is almost 3 years old and weighs 16 pounds.  She has been in our outpatient medika mamba program for several months without successful weight gain.  She also began showing signs of kwashiorkor.  Her papa asked if we could take her for a few months to see if she would improve in an inpatient setting. She comes from a family of 8 children.  They live in a 2 room home made of sticks, mud and tin.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse.  They get their water from a source that runs out of the side of a mountain.  It is about a 15 minute walk from their home.  The day Berlinda was admitted she had nothing to eat and the day before a plate of rice.  The family’s average monthly income is around $133US.  They traveled by foot for 1 hour to arrive at the clinic.  She was started in the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

GUIVENS

He is 3 years old and weighs 18 pounds.  He was referred to us by CHI.  His mama was 15 when he was born and she recently abandoned him at her mother’s house.  His grandma says she has tried to get him to eat and gain weight but he continues to loss weight and was beginning to show signs of kwashiorkor again (this will make 3 times).  He lives in a 1 room home made of rock, clay and tin with his 5 family members.  His grandma has a garden and grows beans and bananas.  The family does not have running water at their home, or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse.  They get their water from a piped system that is about a 10 minute walk from their home.  The day he was admitted he had juice and crackers to eat and the day before a plate of rice. He was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

JONATHAN

This little guy was brought to us by a missionary family here in Haiti.  He was an abandoned child found in Port and taken to social services.  Social services placed him in an orphanage and he was very sick.  He spent several days in a hospital and then was discharged and told to go to another hospital that took care of malnourished children.  That hospital said all their beds were full and sent them to another hospital.  That hospital kept him overnight and then said they could not take care of him.  He was admitted at 10 pounds estimated ago 18 month to 2 years.
