Story #2 from the burn family…Gerlie and Christlene

We wanted to continue sharing with you the stories of the burn family that so many of you have asked about.   There were six children that were burned and one adult.  One of the girls died the next day.  Currently, RHFH is caring for four of the children as inpatients.

Gerlie and Christlene were sisters.  They grew up together and were good playmates.  They were both sleeping beside each other when the fire started.  Christlene was burned over a large part of her body.  She had a plastic colander that was melted into her hair and neck.  She had the deepest burns of all six kids.  She died the next day.

It has been a very difficult time for the family.  Especially the girls mom.  The mom was also burned on her legs, but has healed up quickly.  She could not function well for the first few weeks after her daughter died.  But now she is able to spend most days with Gerlie.  It has been good for both of them in their healing process. Their mother remember seeing the kitchen table on fire through the burning door way and seeing the things hanging from the rafters catching on fire and falling on the kids.

Gerlie has been coming to the clinic since she was 2 years old.  She followed on and off over the years. In 2011-2012 she stayed with us at the RC for 6 months for malnutrition.   This is her before and after picture below.

This  is not her first time as a burn patient.  She also followed for several month for a burn on her left hand when she was a small child.

Gerlie is able to sit up in a chair and walk around with assistance.  She is not back to eating well and still had an NG tube in to get extra calories in her each day.

We wanted to regroup to give you a better idea of the kids current needs.  Here is what we need for this coming month.

June 8 2013 020 c

Ceftriaxone (to fight infection) 21 vials will cost $42.00

June 8 2013 019 c

roll of gauze, to cover wounds, (1 roll  $19.00)( we need 5 rolls per week) will cost $95.00

June 29 2013 a 018 c

Vaseline (to mix with ointments) 12 pounds will cost $8.00

The cost above are per week so one weeks worth would be $145.00 X 4 weeks = $580.00

We had to hire an extra care-giver to come in 24/7 to care for Mirlande.   The cost for this is $434.00

We would also like to begin buying extra meat and eggs for both Gerlie and Mirlande so that they heal well.  Estimates cost for this is $195.00

The total cost needed to care for these 4 burn patients for this month is $1209.00

We appreciate each of you that has prayer for, ask about, and given to this need.  They are all slowly healing.  We are glad that several of them are able to have their mama’s here with them during this healing process.

If you would like to donate to this need you can use the paypal button in the upper right hand corner of the website, or mail donations into the office RHFH/P.O. Box 23/Elwood, IN 46036.  Please include  in the memo “burn patients”  Thanks so much!

In spite of their burns, we saw great big smiles on two of these children when we visited Cazale. RHFH is doing a wonderful job in caring for these children. Our prayers continue for the workers and the patients.
