Construction on the new cholera facility is progressing nicely. Tropical Storm Isaac caused a few issues that needed attention, but construction was not slowed down because of it. Here is a look at the past week’s work:
All the concrete is mixed, shoveled into buckets, and carried to it’s place to be dumped in the trenches.
Many locals have an income right now due to this construction project.
This job is hard work, but we are blessed with hard-working hands.
One rock at a time, the Cholera Treatment Center is coming together.
The stone foundation walls are a fine example of quality workmanship.
About half of the admissions building remains, then all the foundation work on the buildings in this phase of the CTC will be completed. This is very good news, especially considering that we are still in rainy season!
Here’s the curve ball Isaac threw our way:
The hours of torrential rain led to some wash-outs. Thankfully none of the erosion occurred in areas that compromised the construction. We were able to see how the storm runoff flowed. By working with the elements of the land, we can make the necessary adjustments to prepare for any major future rains.
The misek (retainer wall) took a hit, but was able to be fixed.
At the main erosion site, recently planted vetiver was salvaged and will be replanted later.
Load after load of rock was dumped into the area that had the wash-out. The rock will allow the storm runoff to naturally drain off the mountain without taking crucial soil with it.
The stone channels are finished. By using natural resources (rock, vetiver, etc.) and working with nature instead of against it, we hope the RHFH property will be an example to the community to show that erosion prevention is not only possible, but achievable.
Thank you for your continued support and prayers!

September 5, 2012 at 6:23 pmAnna — you and Rambo could come to Minnesota and do the polar plunge. Yes — that’s jumping off the ice into the lake in January (guaranteed to be COLD).
Think about that one.
