New admits to the ICU/ Rescue Center

DELENS

He is 6 years old and weighs 29 pounds (his lowest weight).  He was referred to us from Children’s Health Ministries.  He has been losing weight for about 7 months now and just does not want to eat much.  He also has a cold and cough.  The day he was admitted he has spaghetti to eat and the day before a plate of rice with beans sauce.  He has 1 living sibling and 1 that has died from malnutrition.  His parents both buy items in bulk and resells them to make a profit.  They also have a garden where they grow bananas and corn.  The family of 4 lives in a 2 room home made of cement, cinder block and tin.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse.  They get their water from a source that is about a 10 minute walk form their home.  The families average monthly income is around $53US. His mama traveled 3 hours by motorcycle and taxi to arrive at the clinic.  He was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

RADELENS

He is 16 months old and weighed 15 pounds when admitted.  He currently is 12 pounds after losing 3 pounds from the edema caused by the kwashiorkor.  He was referred to us from Children’s Health Ministries.  His glucose levels were in the 30’s when admitted.  His mama died in December and his papa has been trying to care for him since then.  Many days he would leave him in the house for many hours while he was out working. A distant family member brought him to the clinic and we do not have any family history on him yet.  He was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

JONISE

She is 6 months old and weighs 11 pounds.  She has 2 living siblings and 1 that has died of kwashiorkor.  Her parents got into a fight last month.  When the mama got up in the morning the papa had left with Jonise.  She asked around and tried to find out if anyone knew where they were at.  After about a month she was able to locate them.  The papa beat her up and bit her in several places but she left with Jonise.  Jonise had not been breastfeed for a month and was showing signs of kwashiorkor.  Her mama asked us to keep her in our inpatient program so that they could both heal.  The mama and papa are both farmers and grow beans, corn and bananas in their gardens.  The mama lives in a 1 room home made of sticks, mud and tin.  They get their water from a ditch that is about a 15 minute walk from their home. She travels about 2 hours by foot to arrive at the clinic.  Jonise was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.
