New admits to the Rescue Center and ICU

ANDRY

He is 7 years old and weighs 25 1/2 pounds.  He has been following in our outpatient nutrition program for several months now.  He has a sister that is already in our inpatient program.  His weight has been decreasing for several months now and the papa asked if we could do inpatient care for him along with his sister who is already here.  He has the beginning signs of kwashiorkor as well.  Andry has 6 other siblings.  The family live in a one room home made of tin and sticks.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse.  They travel 30 minutes by foot to the nearest water source and carry it back home in 5 gallon buckets or gallons on their heads.   The parents are both farmers and grow corn and yams in their gardens.  The day he was admitted he had not had anything to eat and the day before he had a plate of millet.  When we asked his papa why he thought the kids were losing weight, he said they lack food.  The families average monthly income is around $166US.  They travels by foot for about 30 minutes to arrive at the clinic.  He was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program and is doing well.aNDRY jAN (427x640)CARLINE

She is 20 months old and weighs 16 pounds.  She was referred to us by Children’s Health Ministries.  Her mama and papa both have died.  She was brought by her aunt that has been caring for her.  She has 2 other siblings at home.  They live in a home made of cinder block, cement and tin.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse.  They buy their water from a vendor near their home.  The day she was admitted she had juice to drink and the day before rice.  She has been sick for the past few weeks with fever, diarrhea and a cold.  She started showing signs of kwashiorkor about 1 week ago.  Her families  average monthly income is around $89US.  They traveled 4 hours by motorcycle and taxi to arrive at the clinic.  She was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then transferred to the medika mamba program.

He is 5 years old and weighs 33 pounds.  He was following on our outpatient mamba program for a few months and has increasing lost weight and when he came in had a 105 temp and was unable to walk or stand up.  He had malaria that had been untreated for several weeks. He also been showing signs of kwashiorkor for about 3 weeks now.   His papa builds houses and his mama buys items in bulk to resell for a profit.  They also have gardens where they grow beans, corn and pumpkins.  The family of 5 lives in a 2 room home made of rocks, clay and tin.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse.  They get their water from a source that is about a 10 minute walk from their home.  The day he was admitted he had coffee and bread and the day before he had soup to eat.  The families average monthly income is around $22US a month.  His family thinks that he is sick with fever and malnutrition due to him having worms.  They traveled for 2 hours by motorcycle to arrive at the clinic.  He was started on treatment for malaria and started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and the graduated to the medika mamba program.

She is 5 years old and weighs 22 pounds.  She was referred to us from Children’s Health Ministries.  She has a cough and cold and has been showing signs of kwashiorkor for about 1 week now.  Her papa builds houses and her mama buys items in bulk and resells them for a profit. They also have a garden where they grow corn and manioc.   She has 5 living siblings and 2 that has died from malnutrition.  The family lives in a 2 room home made of tarp and sticks.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse.  The day she was admitted she had a bowl of soup and the day before she has a plate of rice. The families average monthly income is around $55US per month.  They believe that she has kwashiorkor because she has worms and is anemic.  She was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

She is 8 years old and weighs 38 pounds.  She has been in our outpatient program for several months and lost 4 pounds this past month.  Her mama was very worried about her and ask if we could admit her to our inpatient program.  She has been having diarrhea, cough and cold for the past 2 weeks and just not feeling well.  Her parents are farmers and grow grains and beans in their gardens.   They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse.  The family has to walk 1 hour to get to the nearest water source.  The day she was admitted she has a banana and crackers to eat and the day before she has a plate of rice with bean sauce.  The family traveled 3 hours by foot and motorcycle to arrive at the clinic.  She continued on the mamba program and is recovering well.
