There are 49 patients in the Cholera house tonight-we have 25 beds. This is the most patients we have ever had in one day.
I am not using names today. I am going to tell you some real life stories from the cholera house in just one day. Just today, not yesterday, not last week, not back from November when this all started. Just today. I want you to see them and know their stories. I want you to think what you would do in their place. I want you to feel. I want you to care. I want you to pray. I want cholera to go away. But until it does, we keep on going. (pics and stories used by permission of families)
Mama is in the middle and her two daughter on either side of her. They come from a village that is a 6 hour walk one way. No road-only a dirt path up and down the mountains. They got sick with cholera symptoms and came to the cholera house right away. They only had one bed so the family tied all three of them on the bed and came down the mountain path with them. When I say tied-I mean they actually took a rope and tied all three of them to the bed so they did not fall off. They were going as fast as they could up and down the mountain paths to get here quickly. When they arrived at the cholera house, everyone thought the girl on the far right was dead. The nurse found a weak pulse and started 3 IV lines. She is alive today. Gras a Bondye. Her mom is still very weak and sick.
Mom on right hand side of picture with three of her children. All three with cholera. All three very sick. All three on IV’s She is caring for all of them. 3 kids sharing one cot.
Papa brought child in the back of the bed down to the cholera house. He had to walk about 3 hours to get to a main road. Then he had to pay $10US for a moto to bring them down the rest of the way. The child was very sick. He was scared. The child was scared. Dad got to the gate and admitted his son. He said he could not stay. He had others at his house that were sick. He left to go back up. On his trip back up he found his wife and youngest child coming down. The baby had very bad diar. He brought his wife to the cholera house with the baby. She told him to hurry, their daughter was at home ill as well. Dad jumped on a moto and ran up to his home. When he arrived home he found his daughter dead in the house alone. His only daughter. He had to turn around and come back down and tell his wife. Terrible-just terrible. As she told me her story today, she continued to thank God for saving her two sons.
Mom and baby both sick but doing better. They are from 4 hours away.
As you can see in the pictures we have a lot of kids. We have two needs today that are simple. A one that is a little bigger.
We need gowns for the kids.
The lady in the blue dress in the picture worked a 13 hour shift today. When she got off she came and told us we needed some more gowns. I told her we would find someone in the village to sew them tomorrow. She wanted to go find someone to sew the gowns, so they would not charge us to much money. She just spend another hour walking and finding two people to begin sewing the gowns. She wants to save as much money as she could so we could have funds to buy other supplies. We are going to cut up plain white sheet that we have in the clinic for material. We can get a dozen sewed for $17.50. I would like to have 7 dozen that would be $122.50 for 84 gowns.
We also need some diapers. We have a stock for about 1 week of adult diapers but have none for the kids. We are putting chux pads around the kids to try and catch the poo. We need diapers badly-we can get diapers for .31cents a piece. Dad will be checking tomorrow to see if we can buy a large quantity and get a discount. (he is good at finding good deals:) he is a Zachary) any amount would be a huge blessing to us. I would say we could go through an average of 100 diaper easy per day.
With this crisis situation happening now, we are need need of extra staff. Lori has interviewed many people today. She is currently on the phone right now calling people to give them jobs. It is 9pm. We need to hire staff starting tonight. We will need $1500 right away to hire these new staff members. We need a total of $4500($1500 included in this amount) to staff the cholera house for 1 month. We do not have these funds. But we will begin tonight hiring. We know we serve a big God. A God that is bigger than we can imagine. A God that provides for each and every need. A God that will never let us down. A God that is bigger than cholera. Will you join us today, in prayer for this situation. We need wisdom and peace in this stressful situation. Please consider giving for these three special needs. We will continue to let you know what is happening in our little part of Haiti. May 31, 2011 at 12:02 amJust sent you some money – it’s not much, but the poverty line here isn’t the same as the poverty line there, and I am sure you could use it towards gowns or diapers, or wherever you see fit.

May 31, 2011 at 10:08 amDear Father, We completely trust in your sovereignty; we trust in you when we can’t understand with our simple minds. Please help Licia and Lori, your sweet daughters, to make the right choices to best help your people in and around their community. Give them your peace, the peace that surpasses all understanding, in the decisions they make. Thank you for them, for the other staff who are your hands and feet Jesus. Please Lord, we ask for healing for those in the cholera house. We thank you, Jesus, that you see them, and that you are sitting now at the right hand of the Father, interceding on their behalf. We ask that you God, Jehovah-jireh, to provide the things needed to help the cholera patients. Thank you Lord, for your never ending love and faithfulness.

May 31, 2011 at 10:36 amGod bless your work and all those who are suffering in Haiti. Please use this money wherever you need it most and know that we are praying for you. I will take your need to my Sunday School class as well (you probably already know the Marcums who are also in the class) and I’m sure we will be able to help even more.
