He is 4 years old and weighs 32 pounds. He has kwashiorkor. He could not sit up when admitted and was in bad shape. He is very, very anemic and sick. He is currently on the medika mamba program.
His legs are very tight and painful from the kwashiorkor.
This is the same child the next morning after her slept. This is to show you how the “water” moves around in his body. When this picture was taken his face is a lot more swollen from the day before, but now his legs are not as tight. In these cases we have to decide in what position to lay him. If we put his head to low then his face gets swollen. If we sit him up to high his legs get swollen and he is in a lot of pain.
He is 7 years old and weighs 39 pounds. He has kwashiorkor. He has 6 siblings and 2 of those have died. His dad brought him early on Monday morning before clinic as he was so worried about him. He refuses to eat anything so we are a little concerned about him. He is currently on the medika mamba program.
He has the same problems as the child above, with his swelling.
GUIVENLEY
He is 3 years old and weighs 16 pounds. He was left by mother at his grandmothers house. I asked his mom how long he had been sick like this and she did not know, she had not been to visit him for over 6 months. He is her only child. The mother has a new boyfriend and did not seem to interested in Guivenley. We had a long talk about kids and the blessings that they bring to parents. We talked about how when she gets old Guivenley will be the one taking care of her. So she needs to step up now and take care of him, love him and thank God for the gift of this child.
PETRISSON
He is 5 years old and 22 pounds. He comes from a family of 12 children. Three of these children have died over the years. He has been sick for several months now. His mother has been to several different clinics and cannot find out what is wrong with him. He vomits everything he eats or drinks. Pray for him.
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

June 13, 2011 at 9:18 pmDid Petrisson go wading/swimming a few months ago? Have fever and/or cough? Are his liver and spleen normal?

June 13, 2011 at 10:29 pmNot sure about the wading/swimming. He is from Arc which is not far from the ocean, so could be? No fever or cough. Liver does not seem swollen. What do you think?

June 14, 2011 at 8:48 amI was wondering about the possibility of schistosomiasis mansoni. The typical age groups is 5-15 yo boys who like to swim. Other than local itching where the worms enter, symptoms can take 30-90 days to present. Progression of the disease includes fever, nausea, abdominal discomfort, cough. Later chronic dysentery with malabsorption or liver failure with large liver and spleen. Much later liver failure occurs, with thin limbs and a stomach full of fluid. He may bleed easily or have major bruises from minor injuries. His liver may be very small at this point.
It is just a thought. But if there have been others in their area who have had similar “maladi” it might be worth looking into.
