DIEUVENSKLY

He is 17 months old and weighs 14 pounds.  His mother left him with his grandma (her mother) when he was 10 months old.  Grandma says the mom went to find work in the DR and she has not heard from her since then.   She also left 4 other siblings with grandma. They are older and grandma says they are well.  The family of 8 lives together in a 2 room home made of rocks and tin.  They do not have running water at their home, or a flush toilet, they do have an outhouse.  There is a hand pump water well in front of their home.  Grandma and grandma have a garden near their home where they grow all different kinds of bananas.  Grandma tells us that he has had diarrhea for the past 15 days and also has a cold and cough.  The day he was admitted he drank coffee and had some bread.  The day before he had one meal with rice.  At 17 months he is crawling but not able to walk on his own.  He was started on the F-75 therapeautic milk and then was graduated to the medika mamba.

DORVENSLEY

He is 22 months old and weighs 20 pounds.   His mother was coming to our outpatient feeding program and felt that he was getting worse and was worried about caring for him at home by herself.  This is her first child.  She lives in a 2 room home made of rock and tin.  Her mother lives in a different country and she has not seen her for several years.  Her other siblings are older than her and do not live near her.  So she helps to take care of the house for her mother.  Dorvensley’s dad is still in school and is not in his life much.  They do not have running water at the home, or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse.  They get their water from a source not far from their home.  She has a small garden where she grows beans and bananas.  He began having swelling from kwashiorkor a few weeks ago.  He was started on the F-75 therapeautic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba.

ENOLSON

He is  8 months old and weighs 12 pounds.  He was referred to us by Bread to the Nations.  The family of 10 lives in a one room home made from tarps and sticks.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet,  but do have an outhouse near the home that they can use.  They get their water from a piped water system that is about a 30 minute walk from their home. His mother buys items in bulk and resells them and his father helps to load up the taxi’s.  In the past few days he has had milk and oatmeal.  His mama tells us he has been sick for about 1 month.  He has diarrhea and a bad cough as well.  He was started on the F-75 therapeautic milk and then will graduated to the medika mamba.

GUERLINE

Her mama died in child birth.  Her dad has been following in the clinic with her each month since she was 1 day old.  She has just gained 1 pounds since birth and papa is worried about her.  She is 3 months old now and weighs 7 pounds. She was the beginning stages of kwashiorkor, which is not good for any child, but especially difficult for small babies to recover from.  Pictured below is her paper and 2 sisters that have been her main caregivers for the past few months.

Last week Guerline was at home with the girls above and she had a really high fever.  After a while she began having seizures.  They did not know what to do so called their aunt.  She came and her solutions for the seizures was to get a razor and cut Guerline’s forehead, hands and feet.  Once she did this she collected the blood cooked it and then fed it to her.  It is a very common practice that most of our staff had heard of people doing.  The family of 9 lives in a 4 room home made of rocks, wood, and tin.  They do not have running water at their home but do have an outhouse.  The source where they get water from is near there home.  The father is a farmer that was left with 8 children when his wife died.  He plants corn and beans for his crops.   Guerline also has diarrhea and a bad cough.

LOURDENA

She is 26 months old and weighs 19 pounds 14 ounces.  She is suffering from kwashiorkor, cough and cold, and bad skin.  The family of 5 lives in a one room home made of block and tin.  They do not have running water at their home, or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse.  They get their water from a hand pump about 30 minutes from their home.  Her father is a carpenter and her mother buy and resells products.  They also have a small garden where they grow bananas.  She does not have an appetite to eat much of anything but does like fish.  She is a very sick little girl.  She was started on the F-75 therapeautic milk and will soon graduated to the medika mamba.

SARAPHINA

Her mother died in child birth with her in Jan 2011.  Her dad brought her to RHFH in Feb 2011.  At 1 month old she weighed 4 pounds.  She was transffered up to GLA where she stayed for 4 months.  The picture below is when she returned to RHFH( in the red).  She went home with her papa in Jan 2013 (pictured with her papa).  She weighed 22 1/2 pounds when she went home.

She came back this week weighing 22 pounds and swollen with kwashiorkor.  Her father is a farmer and grows beans, sweet potatoes and corn.  When his wife died he was  left to raise 4 girls and 4 boys by himself.  The family lives in a 2 room home made of sticks, rocks and tin.   They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, or even an outhouse.  They get their water from a source that is about a 10 minute walk from their home.  Her father tells us that she does not want to eat anything but just likes to drink juice.  In the days before she was admitted she had juice and crackers eachday and that is it.  She was started on the F-75 therapeautic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba.

MISLOVE

She is 25 months old and weighs 18 pounds. She was admitted for kwashiorkor, fever, vomiting, worms and not wanting to eat.  Her mama has had 7 children and three of them have died due to malnutrition.  The family on 6 lives in a 2 room home made of rocks and brush.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, they do have an outhouse.  The are able to find water near their home from a well.  The day she was admitted she had not eaten and the day before she has one meal of corn mush.    In the past week she has meat 3 times, and rice or corn mush meals most days. She was started on the F-75 therapeautic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba.
