CIALINE
She is 14 months old and weighs 16 pounds. She started out on our outpatient feeding program. She followed for three weeks without much change in her healing process. Her mama died last year and her papa was discouraged and asked that we keep her for a few weeks to see if she could progress here. Her dad is a farmer and block layer. He grows beans and corn in his gardens. She has two other siblings at home. The family of 4 lives in a 3 room home made of rock, clay and tin. They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse. They get their water from a source just a few minutes from their home. Besides the kwashiorkor, she has been having cough/cold and fever on and off for 2 weeks now. She has been eating some rice, spaghetti and drinking juice and coffee this past week. Her dad tells us she has a good appetite but it is hard to find food to feed her. She continued on the medika mamba when admitted.
DACHLEY
She is 6 years old and weighed 45 pounds when admitted. She currently has lost 15 pounds of water weight and still has a few pounds to go. This is her 3rd time with kwashiorkor. The last time was a month ago. She went to another hospital that provided inpatient care for about 10 days. They refered her to an outpatient program to continue with the medika mamba. The program ran out of mamba for a month. Once she returned home the swelling returned. Her mom began searching for other options and heard that we take kids like her daughter for inpatient care. The family of 4 lives in a 1 room home that they rent. They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse. They get their water from a pipe system that is about 30 minutes away from their home. For the past few days she has just been eating soup. She was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.
NORA
She was refereed to us by Bread for the Nations. She is 8 months old and weighs 10 pounds. She was admitted with a 104 fever and difficulty breathing with O2 stats in the low 80’s and diarrhea on and off for 2 months. The family of 4 lives in a 2 room home made of dirt and sticks. They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet but do have an outhouse. They get their water from a pipe system about 5 minutes away from their home. The day she was admitted she had not had anything to eat and the day before she has porage and a banana. She was started in the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.
ROOD
He is 10 months old and weighs 21 pounds. He is an interesting case of kwashiorkor. His mama stopped breastfeeding him at 8 months old. He was a big healthy boy but just was not getting the right amount of nutrients and protein. While he is swollen he still has fat and muscle unlike many of the other children that we admit. We are hopeful that he will recover quickly. He has had 2 other siblings die from diarrhea and fever. The family of 7 lives in a 2 room home made of rock, clay and tin. They do not have running water or a flush toliet, but do have an outhouse. The mama buy in bulk and resells the items and the father is a farmer. He grows bannanas and sweet potatoes. They get their water from a source that is about 10 minutes away from their home. He was started on the F-75 therauptic milk and the graduted to the medika mamba. We are hopeful that he will have a quick recovery and be able to return home soon with his family.
TONY
Tony is 2 months old and weighs 11 pounds. His mama died on the way to our cholera hospital. She began getting sick in the evening and they tried to make there way down the mountain paths in the dark but she did not make it. His father needed a place for Tony to stay for awhile until he can figure out what how to do from this point. The family of 6 lives in a 1 room home made of clay and tin. They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet not even an outhouse. The family gets their water from a source that is a 2 hour walk from their home.
VERONIKA
She is 14 months old and weighs 11 pounds 10 ounces. Her mama stopped breastfeeding at 5 months old, when she became pregnant with another child She has not been gaining weight since then and for the past 2 months has had fever and vomiting. The family of 6 lives in a 1 room home made of tarps and sticks. They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse. They get the water from a source that is about 5 minutes from their home.
WADLEY
He is 8 months old and weighs 13 pounds. He was a patient at the cholera house before he was admitted to the Rescue Center. There were 2 ladies with him that said they were his aunts. The mother left the child with them and they do not know where she is. They do not know who the father is. For the past 2 months he has been losing weight and getting smaller. He does not eat well but does drink milk. He was started on the medika mamba program.
