OLDINE
She is 2 years old and weighs 27 pounds. She is not a typical case of kwashiorkor. When her swelling went down she did not have a lot of muscle and fat loss like so many of the kids that we see. CHAINA
She is 4 months old and weighs 10 pounds. She came into the clinic with a large abcess on the side of her head. Her mama did not follow through with her medications and it became a large infected area. She is staying inpatient for awhile to get daily dressing changes and received IV medications.
DARLINE
She is 3 1/2 years old and weighs 23 pounds. She followed in our outpatient medika mamba program for several weeks and got increasing worse each week and was then admitted to the inpatient program. He is 7 months old and weighs 9 pounds. He was refereed to us by Bread to the Nations. He has been losing weight for the past 2 months. A doctor told the mother that she needed to stop breastfeeding him, and since then he has been losing weight. The day he was admitted (in the late afternoon) he had not had anything to eat. The day before he had some porage. He comes from a family of 8 living siblings and 1 that has died from fever. The family of 10 lives in a 2 room home that they rent. They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet but do have a outhouse. They buy their water not to far from their home. FIDERLINE
She is 2 1/2 years old and weighs 19 pounds. She has been sick for several months but in the last 2 weeks began having swelling due to the kwashiorkor. She is also having fevers and just had been struggling with illness since admitted. The family of 4 lives in a 2 room home made of rocks, tin and clay. They get their water from a source that is a 30 minute walk from their home. They do not have running water, or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse. She was refered to us from Bread for the Nations. She is 6 years old and weighs 26 pounds. She has been sick for several months but began having swelling from kwashiorkor about 2 weeks ago. Her mama traveled a very long distance in search of help for her daughter. She tells us that she has not seen other children in her area with this illness and was not sure what was causing it. Wilnack came to the clinic severely dehydrated and with a 103 fever, he was a very sick little guy. He is a month old and weighs 5 pounds 8 ounces. His family lives about a 6 hour walk away.
