OLDINE

She is 2 years old and weighs 27 pounds.  She is not a typical case of kwashiorkor.  When her swelling went down she did not have a lot of muscle and fat loss like so many of the kids that we see.  She will just be here an short time and then follow in our outpatient program.    The family of 6 lives in a 2 room home made of block and tin.  The father builds houses and the mother sells produce.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse.   Oldine has been sick for over a month with diarrhea, cough and fever.  She has a good appetite and is eating well and we expect her to do well when she return home.  She was started on the F-75 milk and then graduated to the medika mamba.

CHAINA

She is 4 months old and weighs 10 pounds.  She came into the clinic with a large abcess on the side of her head.  Her mama did not follow through with her medications and it became a large infected area.  She is staying inpatient for awhile to get daily dressing changes and received IV medications.

DARLINE

She is 3 1/2 years old and weighs 23 pounds.  She followed in our outpatient medika mamba program for several weeks and got increasing worse each week and was then admitted to the inpatient program.  The family of 7 lives in a 2 room home made of rock, tin and clay.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even and outhouse.  They get their water from  a source that is about a 35 minute walk from their home.  The family has a garden where they grow beans and corn.   She has worms, cold and fever as well.  Her papa tells us that she does not want to eat much food at all. She was started on the F-75 milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

DAVENS

He is 7 months old and weighs 9 pounds.  He was refereed to us by Bread to the Nations.  He has been losing weight for the past 2 months.  A doctor told the mother that she needed to stop breastfeeding him, and since then he has been losing weight.  The day he was admitted (in the late afternoon) he had not had anything to eat.  The day before he had some porage.   He comes from a family of 8 living siblings and 1 that has died from fever.  The family of 10 lives in a 2 room home that they rent.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet but do have a outhouse.  They buy their water not to far from their home.  He was started in the F-75 milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

FIDERLINE

She is 2 1/2 years old and weighs 19 pounds.  She has been sick for several months but in the last 2 weeks began having swelling due to the kwashiorkor.  She is also having fevers and just had been struggling with illness since admitted.  The family of 4 lives in a 2 room home made of rocks, tin and clay.  They get their water from a source that is a 30 minute walk from their home.  They do not have running water, or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse.  Her father is a taxi driver and her mother sells produce.  Her diet has been mostly rice and not much else.  She was started on the F-75 milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

JODERLINE

She is 20 months old and weighs 19 pounds.  She has been sick for a few weeks with cold, cough and fever.  She has been swollen with kwashiorkor for 2 weeks now.  She also has worms.  She does not have much of an appetite to eat and just does not feel well.    The family of 5 lives in a one room home made of clay, rocks and tin.  They do not have running water at their home, or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse.  They get their water from a source that is about a 15 minute walk from their home.  The parents are both farmers and grow beans and corn in their garden.  In the last week she has had rice one and has mostly been eating crackers.  She was started on the F-75 milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

LAURINA

She was refered to us from Bread for the Nations.  She is 6 years old and weighs 26 pounds.  She has been sick for several months but began having swelling from kwashiorkor about 2 weeks ago.  Her mama traveled a very long distance in search of help for her daughter.  She tells us that she has not seen other children in her area with this illness and was not sure what was causing it.  Most of her hair is falling out and she has worms.   In the past week she has been eating porage (which is flour and sugar cooked up), rice and drinking juice.  She asks for meat to eat everyday, but when given fish she has no idea what it was.  The family of 7 lives in a one room home made of rocks, clay and tin.  There has been 2 children that have died of fever when they were babies.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse.  They get their water from a source that is about a 30 minute walk from their home.  She was started on the F-75 milk and then graduated to the medika mamba.

PETERSON 

He is 2 years old and weighs 15 pounds.  The family of 5 lives in a 2 room home made of rocks, clay and tin.  His mother left him with an aunt and they have not seen her for a few months.    His aunt brought him to the clinic.  He legs were so swollen they were leaking water.  She told us he had been swollen for about 10 days.  He is an only child.  His papa is a farmer and grows beans, corn and potatoes.  They live in a 2 room home made from rocks, clay and tin.  They do not have running water at their home or  a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse.  The get their water from a source that is a 40 minute walk from their home.  The day he was admitted he had not had anything to eat, and the day before he spaghetti.   He was started on the F-75 milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program. 

WILNACK

Wilnack came to the clinic severely dehydrated and with a 103 fever, he was a very sick little guy.  He is a month old and weighs 5 pounds 8 ounces.  His family lives about a 6 hour walk away.   His father has a garden and plants beans and corn.  There are 7 living children and 1 that died when it was a baby.  The family of 8 lives in a 2 room home made of rocks, clay and tin.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse.  The source where they get their water from is a 1 hour walk one way from their home.

CHRISMENE

She is 5 years old and weighs 20 pounds.  She was in our inpatient program in 2008/09 and this is her going home picture.

JOSUE

He is 21 months old and weighs 20 pounds.  He was refereed to us by Bread to the Nations.  He has been sick with diarrhea, vomiting, for several weeks.  In the past he has had kwashiorkor 4 times.  He was very dehydrated when he was admitted and just did not feel well.  The family of 6 lives in a 2 room home made of block and tin.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse.  They get their water from a piped system that is about 15 minutes from their home.  The day before he was admitted he had nothing to eat and the day admitted he had some rice.  He was very ill the first few days but gradually began to improve.  He was started on the F-75 milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.
