JEANNEAU
He is 9 months old and weighs 10 pounds. His papa is his primary caregiver. He has been following in the clinic since he was 4 months old faithfully. When he came in this month he was severely dehydrated and had the beginning signs of kwashiorkor, puffy cheeks and swollen feet. His papa was very upset and worried about his son. He decided to leave him for inpatient care due to him being so sick. He has 2 older sisters at home and the family lives in a 4 room home made of rocks, tin and clay. They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet not even an outhouse. They get their water from a source that is about a 30 minute walk from their home. The papa is a farmer and grows beans and grains in his fields. They traveled to the clinic by taxi and moto and it took them about 3 hours to get here. The family has an average income of $11US per month. Jeanneau was started in the F-75 milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.
LOVEKENSIA
She is 2 years old and weighs 17 pounds. She was referred to us by Bread to the Nations. The swelling in her legs and feet is so severe that the skin split open around her ankles. She has 2 living brother and 2 living sister, and one sibling that died when it was a baby. The family lives in a 2 room home made of rocks, clay and tin. They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet but do have and outhouse. They get their water from a source that is about a 10 minute walk from their home. Her papa is a carpenter and her mama buy items in bulk and resells them for a profit. She has been sick for many months but started showing signs of kwashiorkor about 3 weeks ago. The day she was admitted she had some spaghetti to eat and the day before she has nothing to eat. This is her second time with kwashiorkor. She was started on the F-75 milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.
WEDSON
He is 3 1/2 years old and weighs 29 pounds. He was referred to us from Bread to the Nations. Wedson had been sick for several weeks and began to develop swelling in his legs and feet. He did not seem like a typical case of malnutrition and we were concerns about his fever. We got some test done and he was treated for malaria, worms and anemia. He was added to the medika mamba program and reached his goal weigh in a few weeks. His family was very thankful and he was able to return home this week after being here for 2 weeks.
ROSE GUERLINE
She is 18 months old and weighs 17 1/2 pounds. Her papa is her caregiver and he tells us that her mama is crazy and not able to take care of the kids. She has 3 living sisters and 1 living brother. There is one child that died when it was a baby. The family lives in a 2 room home made of rocks, clay and tin. They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse. They get their water from a source that is just a few minutes from their home. The papa is a farmer and grows beans and corn in his gardens. The day she was admitted she had not had anything to eat and the day before she had soup. She has been showing signs of kwashiorkor for about 2 weeks now. The family has a monthly income of about $58US. Her grandmother is the one that brought her to the clinic, she walked about 3 hours to get her. She thinks that Rose Guerline is sick and malnourished due to her mama being crazy. She would take Rose Guerline and carry her around for several days walking the streets with her. She was started on the F-75 milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.
