New Admits to the Rescue Center

EMANISE

She is 13 months old and weighed 22 pounds when admitted.  She has since lost 7 pounds of edema from her kwashiorkor.  She was referred to us from Children Health Ministries.  She was admitted with a 101 temp and this is her 2nd time with kwashiorkor.  Both of her parents have died and she is living with her grandparents and her main caregiver is her aunt.  There are 12 people living in a 2 room home.  They do not have running water at the house or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse.  The day she was admitted she had some peanut butter to eat and the day before she had oatmeal.  The families average monthly income is around $160US.  She was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then transferred to the medika mamba program.

ILVANA

She is 8 years old and weighs 46 pounds.  She has severe kwashiorkor.  Ilvana has 2 living siblings and 2 that had died from kwashiorkor.  Her parents are both farmers and grow beans corn and grains in their gardens.  The family of 5 lives in a 2 room home made of rocks, clay and tin.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse.  They get their water from a source that is about a 10 minute walk from their home.  The day she was admitted she had nothing to eat and the day before she had a glass of milk.  This is the 4th time she has had kwashiorkor. Her mama does not understand why she is like this but said she will never stop praying for healing for her.  The families average monthly income is around $85US.  She was started on the the F-75 milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

He is 7 years old and weighed 50 pounds when admitted.  He has since lost 20 pounds of water weight.  Several months ago his mama left him with his grandma and has not returned.  His papa plants beans and corn in his gardens and also makes jewelry.  He has 2 other siblings that live with his grandma as well.  The family of 12 lives in a 2 room home made of rocks, clay and tin.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse.  They get their water from a source that is about a 30 minute walk from their home.  The day he was admitted he had not had anything to eat and the day before he had stew.  The families average monthly income is around $96US.  They carried him up and down the mountain paths for 5 hours to arrive at the clinic.  He was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

MAJANA

She is 5 years old and weighs 20 pounds.  Her parents are both farmers and grow beans and corn in their gardens.  She has 5 livings siblings and 1 that died when it was just a few days old. The family of 8 lives in a 4 room home made of rocks, clay and tin.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse.. They get their water from a source that is about a 30 minute walk from their home.  The day she was admitted she had a plate of rice to eat and the day before a plate of spaghetti.  Besides being malnourished her parents had abandoned the outpatient program twice and the nurse felt she needed inpatient care.  She has been losing weight for about 3 months now.  This is her second time with kwashiorkor.  Her families average monthly income is around $43US.  She was started in the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

He is 3 1/2 years old and weighed 29 pounds when admitted.  Since that time he lost 10 pounds of water weight from his kwashiorkor.  His glucose level was 23 when admitted and he was very ill. He had been showing signs of kwashiorkor for about 1 month before they came to the clinic.  He has 6 living siblings at home and 2 that have died from fever and diarrhea.  The family of 9 lives in a 2 room home made of rocks, clay and tin.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse.  They get their water form a source that is about a 10 minute walk from their home.  The families average monthly income is around $53US.  They traveled 3 hours by foot to arrive at the clinic.  He was started in the F-75 therapeutic milk and then transferred to the medika mamba program.

RITCHNERLIE

She is 8 months old and weighs 8 pounds.  She was referred to us from Children Health Ministries.  She has 2 other siblings at home.  Her papa is the primary care giver at the home.  The mama is not stable and leaves the home for weeks at a time.  The family lives in a 2 room home made of cinder block, cement and tin.  Her mama breastfeed for for 1 month and then left for several weeks.  Since that time her papa has been feeding her porage and milk when he has funds to purchase it.  The families average monthly income is around $96US.   She was started on the medika mamba program and continues to improve.

ROSE MICA

She is 3 1/2 years old and weighs 21 pounds.  She has some mild kwashiorkor, with swelling in her feet and ankles this is her second time with kwashiorkor  She failed the appetite test given to her for medika mamba so this is another reason she was admitted to inpatient care.   Her mama died at the beginning of this year.  Her papa is a farmer and grows beans, corn and grains in his gardens.  The family of 4 lives in a 2 room home made of rocks, clay and tin.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse.  They get their water from a source that is about a 10 minute walk from their home.  The day she was admitted she had not had anything to eat and the day before she had a plate of rice.  The families average monthly income is around $43US.  The papa thinks that she is sick because the mama died and is making her sick now.  They traveled by foot for 5 hours to arrived at the clinic.  She was started on the F-therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

WISLY

He is 2 1/2 years old and weighs 23 pounds.  He also has beginning signs of kwashiorkor for about 5 days now.  His brother is Jamesly (see below).  He has one other siblings at home.  The day he was admitted he had a banana and fried flour balls to eat, and the day before he had a plate of spaghetti.  In the past week he had some type of protein only twice in his meals.  He was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

JAMESLY

He is 5 months old and weighs 10 pounds 6 ounces.  He brother is Wisly above.   Their father abandoned them a few months ago with their mama.  There is one other child that is older than Wisly and Jamesly.  The kids were in a crisis situations and the mama was living with them on someone’s porch.  She asked if we could keep them for a short time until she could get a place for them to live.  Jamesly was beginning to show signs of kwashiorkor as well as Wisly.  Jamesly has a fever when admitted along with a cold/cough.  They traveled about 2 hours by taxi and motorcycle to arrive at the clinic.  Due to her situation the family has no income at this time.  He was started on the medika mamba program.
