He is 4 months old and weighs 6 pounds 12 ounces. He was referred to us from Children’s Health Ministries. He is a -4SD. He was admitted with a glucose level of 30 and a fever of 103. His mama buys items in bulk and resells them for a profit, and his dad is a farmer and grows grains and corn in his garden. He has 6 siblings that are living and 1 that has died of diarrhea and fever. The family of 8 lives in a 1 room home made of tarps and sticks. They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse. They purchase their water from a vender near their home. The families average monthly income is around $60US.
CHARITHESE, GARDNET & GARDSON
This is a family referred to us from Haiti Mama. The mother weighs 69 pounds and has been sick for several months. She was treated for Malaria and a few other things but is still having fevers and losing weight. Gardnet, her son, is 5 years old and weighs 27 pounds. Gardson, her other son, is 3 1/2 years old and weighs 22 pounds. They live near the Petionville area in a one room home. The boys are not severely malnourished but a -2SD and -3SD and we did not want to separate them. We going to get some testing done and hopefully they will begin to gain weight.
CINTIANA
She is 8 years old and weighs 35 pounds. She has a severe case of Juvenile Arthritis. She was following on our outpatient program but become increasing worse and also had a 105 temp. She is unable to walk and the family was traveling each week 4 hours one way, so we admitted her to the inpatient program. She has 4 living siblings and 1 that died when it was a baby. The family of 9 lives in a 2 room home made of tin, rocks, and cement. They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse. They get their water from a source that is about 5 minutes from their home. She was started on medications and the medika mamba program. They traveled 4 hours by motorcycle and foot to arrive at the clinic. She was started on the medika mamba program as well and is greatly improving.
She is 20 months old and weighs 17 pounds 5 ounces. She has a fever, diarrhea and the beginning signs of kwashiorkor. She failed the appetite test and was admitted for inpatient care. Both of her parents are farmers and grow beans, corn and grains in their gardens. She has 1 living siblings and 1 that died when it was a baby. The family lives in a 1 room home made of rocks, tin and clay. They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse. They get their water from a source that is a 2 hour walk from their home.The day she was admitted she has a plate of rice to eat and the day before she has boiled banana in fish sauce. The families average monthly income is around $100US. They traveled 3 hours by foot to arrive at the clinic. She was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.
KATTIANA
She is 1 1/2 months old and weighs 3 pounds 6 ounces. Her mama died the night before she was admitted. All of her other siblings have died and she is all her papa has left. He is a farmer and grows beans, corn and pumpkins in his gardens. He lives in a 2 room home made of rocks, clay and tin. He does not have running water at his home or a flush toilet, but does have an outhouse. He gets his water from a source that is about a 20 minute walk from his home. He walked about 3 hours with her to arrive at the clinic.
LOUDJINA
She is 6 months old and weighs 9 pounds 7 ounces. She was referred to us from Children’s Health Ministries. The family lives in a 1 room home made of block, tin and cement. They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse. They purchase their water from a vendor that is a about a 10 minute walk from their home. She was admitted with a fever, diarrhea, cough and vomiting. She is a -4SD degree of malnutrition. The day she was admitted she had nothing to eat and the day before she has carrot juice. The families average monthly income is around $120US. They traveled about 4 hours by motorcycle and taxi to arrive at the clinic.
MACKNEL
He is 5 years old and weighs 20 pounds. He is a -3SD and has +2 edema ( swelling in feet, ankles, legs, and lower arms) from the kwashiorkor. The day he was admitted he had not had anything to eat and the day before he has a banana. His parents are both farmers and grow grains and beans in their gardens The family of 6 lives in a 2 room home made of sticks, tin and clay. They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse. They get their water from a source that is about a 3 minute walk from their home. They traveled 3 hours by foot to arrive at the clinic. The families average monthly income is around $100US. He was started of the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.
STANLEY MARVENSLY
He is 14 months old and weighs 14 pounds 8 ounces. He has a terrible case of thrush that is so bad his mouth is split open and bleeding in several places. He has had diarrhea for 2 weeks now and also a fever. The day he was admitted he had nothing to eat and the day before he has a jar of baby food. His parents are farmers and grow bananas in their gardens. He has 2 other siblings as well. The family lives in a 2 room home made of cinder block, tin and cement. They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse. They get their water from a piped system that is near their home. The families average monthly income is around $120US. He is beginning to show mild signs of kwashiorkor (swelling in his feet) and is a -4SD degree of malnutrition, which is the worst. He was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.
