JEANDLEY (and his sister below Jeandeline)
He is 5 years old and weighs 32 pounds. He and his sister (Jeandeline) are from up by Cap-Haitian. Their papa died last year and he was from a town that is not very far from Cazale. His mama said Jeandley was in a hospital near her home but it closed down for a time. When he began to show signs of kwashiorkor she traveled down to where their papa was from in search of help. Jeandley has been showing signs of kwashiorkor for about 2 months now. While in the hospital he began to get better but once back home became worse. His legs are so swollen that they are leaking fluids in several places. The day he was admitted he had a piece of fish to eat and the day before a plate of spaghetti. He was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.
JEANDELINE (brother above Jeandley)
She is 6 years old and weighs 40 pounds. She is not as bad as her brother and is just in the beginning stages of kwashiorkor. She does have a 103 temp and has not been eating well for the past few weeks. The family lives in a 4 room home made of sticks, dirt and tin. They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse. They buy their water from a vendor that passes by their home each day. KENLOVE
He is 8 years old and weighed 31 pounds when admitted. (I do not have his picture when he first arrived this is a few weeks later). He was in the beginning stages of kwashiorkor and was refusing to eat or drink anything. His mama told us that he had been losing weight for about 1 month and had been showing signs of kwashiorkor for about 5 days. He also had a fever of 104 when admitted. His parents were both there when he was admitted and told is he is unable to speak or hear. One of our volunteers has been working with him to begin teaching him some basic sign language and he is doing well. He was started on the medika mamba program.
She is 6 months old and weighed 5 pounds 8 ounces when admitted. She was referred to us from Children’s Health Ministries. We do not have a lot of information about her. Her mama is sick and has been unable to care for her. Her grandma took her to church to have people pray for her and see if she could find some help somewhere. Some members of the church offered to make the trip to Cazale since grandma was not able to walk very far on her own. She was in the beginning stages of kwashiorkor when admitted and also had a fever. She has a lot to overcome at 6 months old and only 5 1/2 pounds.
CAROUSE
This little guys was admitted at just a little over 4 pounds and is 1 month old. His mama is alive and had been breastfeeding him since birth. But he continued to decline and lose weight. They were both referred to us from Children’s Health Ministries. We worked with his mama for a few weeks to get her milk production up but there was not any weight gain. We learned that she had left 5 other children at a neighbor’s house to come to Cazale. Her husband was killed last month as well trying to return from the Dominican Republic. He was hacked up with machetes with some others from their area. She asked that we keep him here and return home with her other kids for a time. We all agreed that he needed to stay. He has since begun to gain weight and improve. His mama has a garden where she grows beans, potatoes, and corn. She also buys items in bulk and resells them for a profit. The family lives in a 1 room home made of tin and sticks. They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse. They get their water from a piped system that is about a 5 minute walk from their home. They traveled about 4 hours by motorcycle and taxi to arrive at the clinic.
