New Admits

Anold and Desline are 33-month-old twins that live with their mother and father along with three other siblings in a two-room house made of rocks, clay and tin. They don’t have a bathroom or an outhouse. The family’s only source of water is a river they must walk 15 minutes each way to fetch water from.  Their father is a farmer who grows corn and beans to help feed his family and provide a source of income. The mother sells goods to help provide for her family.

Anold and Desline were admitted to ICU after they came to the clinic with their mother and uncle to be treated for watery diarrhea, loss of appetite and a cough. They have never been treated for malnutrition before, but were swollen due to kwashiorkor when they came in to clinic. The mother said she noticed they began losing their hair and their skin had begun peeling about a month before they came in.  Both children had scabies and were treated with topical and oral medications to prevent the spread of the disease.

Anold weighed 16.5 pounds and Desline weighed 16.3 pounds when they were admitted to the clinic.

Sivender is 22 months old. He lives with both of his parents and 3 siblings in a two-room house with no bathroom or out house.  The nearest source of water is almost two hours away by foot. His father is a farmer who grows corn, beans and pumpkins to help feed his family and provide a source of income. His mother sells goods to help provide funds for the family. Sivender was admitted to the ICU after coming to the clinic with his mother who traveled 3 hours by moto to seek care for her son.  His mother told us he was “sick and swollen for 3 days” even though his mother says he has a good appetite and eats well.  Sivender weighed 14.9 pounds and was swollen due to kwashiorkorv when he was admitted to the center.

Marudlie is 20 months old and was referred to us by Healing Haiti. She was admitted to ICU after she was brought in to the clinic by her older sister with a fever of 103.5. She also had cold symptoms and swelling that had been going on for 15 days.  Her sister told us that her hair had been falling out and that she refused to eat. She lives with both her parents and 3 of her siblings. Her father is a Tap-Tap driver and has a garden, where he grows beans and corn to help feed his family. They live in a two-room house made of cement, rocks and tin and have a small outhouse. Their only source of water is a river they must walk to and fetch water from.  Marudlie weighed 15.6 pounds when she came into the clinic.

Rebecca is 27 months old and has Downs syndrome. She was referred to us by Healing Haiti. She lives with both parents and 6 of her 12 siblings in a 2-room house made of sticks, dirt and tin. They have a small outhouse. They buy their water from a truck and store it in buckets. Her father drives a Tap-Tap as the main source of income and her mother sells goods. They do not have a garden to help provide food for the family.

When she came into the clinic with her mother, Rebecca was running a fever of 102.5 with cold symptoms and had low oxygen levels. Her mother told us that Rebecca had not been eating well, had lost weight, and had been swollen for two weeks. Her mother had to travel two hours by moto to bring her to the clinic. Her mother told us she has already lost four children and is afraid she will lose Rebecca as well. Rebecca weighed 12.7 pounds and was swollen due to kwashiorkor when she was admitted to the ICU.

Love Kendia is 9 months old. She lives with her father after her mother died from chest pains shortly after her birth. They live in a two-room house made of sticks, clay and tin. They don’t have a bathroom or an outhouse.  Her father is a farmer who grows corn, beans and pumpkins to help feed his family and provide a source of income. Her Father walked 3 hours to bring her in to the clinic because he was concerned when she began to lose weight about 2 months ago. When she was admitted she had a fever and did not have a good appetite. Love Kendia only weighed 13 pounds when she was admitted to the clinic and was swollen from malnutrition.

Since she was admitted to our Rescue Center and placed on our Medika Mamba Program Love Kendia has already gained 2.4 pounds and now weighs 15.4 pounds.
