New Admits

MACKENDY

Mackendy was brought to the clinic by his mama.  He has one other sibling that is a sister.  His mom cleans houses for a living and his papa builds houses.  His papa in not in his life and does not care for him.  The mom lives in a 3-room home with 12 other people. Most are young single mom’s.  They get their water from a pump that is about 5 minutes from their home. Mackendy has been sick with a cold and fever for 1 month.  He has been losing weight for several months.  His mom breast feed him for a few months but then stopped. He was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

WOODANIKA

She is 7 months only and weighs 9 pounds 4 ounces.  Her aunt brought her to the clinic for help.  Woodanaika’s mom has been sick for about 4 months.  She has not been breastfeeding her during that time.  They tried to purchase formula for her, but ran out of money.  They are currently feeding her twice a day with meals of bean sauce or bananas.  She has been losing weight for several months and has had a fever for about 1 week now.  She was started on the medika mamba program and is doing well.

WOODJINA

Woudjina is 9 months old and weighed 9 pounds when she was admitted.  Her parents and both young and neither one has been caring for her since she was 4 months old.  She has been staying with her grandma and become sick a few months ago.  Her mom went and got her and brought her for inpatient care.  She was very sick and weak when admitted.  She was malnourished and had lots of diarrhea and a fever.  Her grandma has a garden where she grows tomatoes and beans to sell for a profit.  They live in a home made of tin, rocks and clay.  She was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

STANLEY

Stanley was brought to us from another organization that is treating malnutrition with outpatient services. His brother was also admitted, but died a few days later. His mama moved to the Dominican Republic last year.  She left the 8 children with the papa who is an alcoholic.  He has not been taking care of the children and a neighbor called the staff at the center to come see if they could help the children.  They found them alone and starving. We don’t have much more info on him.  He was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

SCHNAYLINE

She weighs 6 pounds 8 ounces and is 6 months old.  Her mama did not breastfeed her and has been giving her formula twice a day with porridge.  She has been having diarrhea and vomiting for about 1 month.  Her father is a mechanic and her mama buys items in bulk and then resells them for a profit.  The family of 5 lives in a 1 room home made of sticks and a tarp.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse.  They purchase their water from a vendor that is about a 5 minute walk from their home. She was slowly started on medika mamba and is responding well to treatment.

NONO

He was brought to clinic by his father.  Nono’s father has not been in his life since he was 18 months old when he and Nono’s mom separated.  Nono’s father remarried and started a life with his new family.  At the end of last year, word was sent to him that Nono’s mom had died.  He went to see Nono and was shocked at his state.  Nono is now 10 years old.  He is unable to walk without assistance and has lots of old burns and scars.  He also had seizures.  He is a smart child, but processes information slowly. He was started on medications and medika mamba and we are hopeful he will have a full recovery.
