Volunteer Spotlight, Allison

This is my third time coming to Haiti so I’ve had some experience but this is the first time coming as a Registered Nurse. Half of the reason I wanted to go into the nursing field is so I could use my nursing for mission work. I had no idea it would be this rewarding. Coming to and working with the people involved in RHFH has been such an amazing experience. The children who are in the ICU and Rescue Center are so joyful. They are happy, they are full, and they are loved. It was a really touching experience to be a part of witnessing the foster children come in with their foster families for their check up in the clinic. It is so cool to see other families step in and provide for these children, most of whom have mild-major developmental/physical limitations.

My favorite part of the trip was getting to love on the littles in the ICU. It is so tough there but man is it rewarding. Getting to assess them and spend a little time with them each evening is one of the things I will greatly miss. The emotional transformation that happens with these kids is so incredible. They come in somber, withdrawn, and wary. Within a few weeks they are smiling and goodness it’s the most amazing thing to see. My goal at the beginning of the month was to get one of the little boys to smile. He was a tough nut to crack but finally this last week I was successful!

RHFH is doing such amazing work. Lori, Licia, and the on staff nurses and doctors are so incredible. It was such a privilege getting to know them. Through the losses and the success’ they have handled everything with such strength and love. They are so strong and dedicated to the mission of serving Christ and bettering the country of Haiti one kiddo and person at a time. Thank you so much for the experience and making my time here at RHFH unforgettable!!
