This baby girl came to RHFH at the end of November 2019. She was 11 months old and weighed 4.6 kg (10.1 pounds). Her weight for height was 6 standard deviations below the average for Haitian children = she was really, severely malnourished. I left on December 14th with my husband and children to celebrate Christmas with family in Washington State. I remember standing by this baby’s bed thinking that it would be a miracle if she was still alive when I returned in January. She was not gaining weight and her lung exam was changing, work of breathing increasing. Her condition deteriorated over the next week- her oxygen levels declined and she required supplemental oxygen and albuterol breathing treatments and steroids and antibiotics. I received multiple updates, and the prognosis was not good. But God is a God of miracles and miracles still happen. By the grace of God and excellent care provided by the nannies, Haitian nurses and the American staff, the patient was still with us upon my return from the US. She looked like a different kid when I saw her. She is laughing and playing. She remains malnourished but is making progress. We have a lot of sad stories to tell, but we have more happy stories than sad and this is an example of a happy story. Pray for this little one that she will continue to grow and gain strength and that her family will be able to care for her when she is reunited with them.
