New Admits to the Rescue Center

FEDNEL

Fednel is 15 months old and weighs 19 pounds, several pounds of this weight is from his swelling due to kwashiorkor. He was brought to the clinic by his mama and grandma. His mom stopped breastfeeding him 2 months ago and he has been declining since that time. He does not like to eat much and began to develop edema due to kwashiorkor about 1 week before coming to the clinic. This is his first time with kwashiorkor. He lives in a 2 room home with his mom, dad and sister. Their home is made clay, sticks and covered with a tin roof. They do not have running water at their home or a flush toliet, not even an outhouse. They get their water from a source that is about a 20 minute walk from their home. The parents are both farmers and grow corn and beans in their gardens. They then harvest and take these crops to sell at local open air markets. They walked 3 hours to arrive at the clinic. He was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

BRISLET

Brislet was left at home by himself while the rest of the family went to church. He was hungry and tried to climb a tree to get a mango out of the tree. He fell and had a large laceration on his head down to the bone. His mom and dad both died several years ago and he now lives with his uncle. The family lives in a 4 room home made of rock and cement and is covered with a tin roof. They do not have running water at their home or a flush toliet, but do have an outhouse. They have to walk 2 hours to find fresh drinking water from a source. He stayed with us for a few weeks so that he could receive daily dressing changes and needed medications.

SHELDA

Shelda was sent to us by a clinic on the other side of the island. They had been treating her in an outpatient setting for several years for diabetes. She was declining to the point they were worried that she might die. She is also blind. Shelda and her mom came together to stay with us. She was very weak when she arrived and unable to walk on her own well.
