Words from Gretchen – August 1994

Hello again Mom,

This time I’m feeling so good and I’m getting my strength back daily. I worked at clinic today non-stop and have been writing letters all afternoon. I admit it’s not too taxing, but for days I took long afternoon naps when I was running a fever. I am so thankful to be feeling better.

We are still in great need of rain and water. Almost every night around 5:00, it starts thundering and blowing, but the rain stays up in the mountains and never seems to blow our way. They tell us August is usually very wet and lots of thunderstorms. We need it to cool off and to wash away the dust.

Are you getting tired of hearing about Haiti on TV? I live here and I am really interested, but sometimes I think it’s being run into the ground. Everybody has an opinion. They need to live here a while and then see what they think.

God is blessing our efforts here and I’m sure all the news has helped put us on peoples minds. The last couple months both us and the people we are with have had more support come in. We’ve been able to add more children and more elderly to our feeding programs. We have more money to send people who need hospital care and are making arrangements for two surgeries in September for two children. It is sure a good feeling and no doubt these people are so thankful for help. Poor Rwanda. They need help and food so bad. How can this happen to so many innocent people? We should never complain about anything. We are so blessed.

I sure hope you’ve written. We haven’t gotten any letter since about the middle of June, so I’m looking forward to some family news. Anything counts. We’re so isolated here. Heat, long days, beans and rice. That’s about all we know.

Well, we hope you are having lots of good days. Praise God for air conditioners. Hope you’re using yours. Will right whenever I can. They are working hard to get our mail service back on a more regular basis – whatever that means. Mail or not, I think of you every day and miss our visits and phone talks.
