Different types of cooking fuels used in Cazale

There are 3 main types of cooking fuel that are currently used in the Cazale area. We wanted to share with you how those in our area cook their daily meals. One source of fuel is propane. Propane can be purchased in Haiti, when it is available, and some use this option. For our village that means strapping a tank on a moto and traveling 25 minutes to a town that can refill the tank.

Next is charcoal. People in our village make charcoal by cutting down trees in the area. This charcoal is sold to those be able to cook each day for their families. For many propane is an expense they do not have in their budgets, but they can make or purchase charcoal.

Last is using local wood or sticks. Many times children spend hours walking and searching for wood to be able to cook on. The advantage is that the wood they find is free. The wood burns quicker than the charcoal so you must have a bundle to be able to cook a meal.
