New admits to the Rescue Center

MERLENS

Merlens is a 10 month old male that weighs 12 pounds.  He was admitted for inpatient care with low glucose levels, mild kwashiorkor, and sores all over his body.  He was also anemic and dehydrated when admitted.  Merlens lives in a 2 room home with 4 others.  His mom died when he was 5 months old, and no one has seen his dad for many months.  He is being cared for by his aunt. He is an only child.  His aunt has banana gardens where she sells the produce each week. They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet but do have an outhouse. They get their water from a piped system that is in their yard. Merlens was breastfeed until his mama died.  Since that time his health has declined.  He eats porridge, baby food and milk when they can find it to purchase. His aunt traveled 3 hours by motorcycle taxi to arrive at the clinic.  He started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

DJOUVENSKY

jolensky is 23 months old and weighed 18 pounds when admitted. He lives with 6 family members in a 3 room build with cinder block and covered with a tin roof. He has 1 livings sister and 1 brother and 1 that died of diarrhea. He mom buys items in bulk and resells them for a profit.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet but do have an outhouse.  They get their water from a piped system that is a 1 hour walk from their home.  The family traveled 1 hour motorcycle to arrive at the clinic.  He is a -3 for standard deviations of weight to height which is considered severely malnourished. He also has edema due to kwashiorkor. He was admitted for inpatient care and was started on F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba. This is his second time being admitted for inpatient care.

Calicson and Modson are brothers.  Calicson is 6 years old and weighed 20 pounds when admitted. Modson is 3 years old and weighed 20 pounds when admitted. The boys live with their parents in a 2 room home built with rocks and clay and covered with a tin roof. Both of their parents are farmers and grow beans, corn, and pumpkins in their gardens. They take this produce and sell it in open air markets to make a profit for their family.   They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet but do have an outhouse.  They get their water from a spring that is a 1 hour walk from their home.  The family traveled 6 hours by foot and motorcycle to arrive at the clinic.  Calicson is a -4 and Modson is a -3  for standard deviations of weight to height which is considered severely malnourished. They were started in the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

STERLINE

Sterline is 3 months old and weighed 6 pounds 8 ounces when admitted. She lives with her mom and 1 sibling in a 2 room built with cinder block and covered with a tin roof. She has one sibling that died of malnutrition.  Her mom works cleaning and cooking for families near her home. Her dad is not around and does not care for her.   They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet but do have an outhouse.  They get their water from a piped system that is a 1 hour walk from their home.  The family traveled 1 hour by motorcycle to arrive at the clinic.  She was admitted with fever, cough and cold and edema due to kwashiorkor. Her oxygen levels were low, and she was started on oxygen right away.
