New admits to the Rescue Center

Emilca, an 8 month old, weighing 12 pounds, arrived at the clinic accompanied by both her parents, who had no funds for transportation, compelling them to walk a lengthy 6 miles each way to reach the clinic. She is their only child, but her mother is expecting another baby. Both parents, young and displaced due to gang activity, have lost all their possessions and livelihood, including produce and items for sale.

Emilca has been displaying symptoms of kwashiorkor for approximately three months now. Prior to their visit to the clinic, she experienced diarrhea, and for the two days leading up to it, her diet consisted solely of crackers. Upon arrival, she was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then began the medika mamba.

Missander is 9 months old and weighed 11 pound when admitted. His family sought medical attention at a local clinic near his home. Following a few days of observation, it was determined that his condition was too severe for outpatient care. Consequently, he was referred to our clinic for inpatient treatment. Despite the long journey of 12 hours, his family made the trip to reach us. Missander has two sisters and a brother, and their parents are farmers, cultivating beans and corn in their garden.

Their home consists of three rooms constructed from rocks, clay, and topped with a tin roof. Unfortunately, basic amenities like running water and flush toilets are absent, leaving them without even an outhouse. Missander had been unwell for several weeks, suffering from fever, diarrhea, and a cold. Additionally, he experienced edema for approximately three weeks. Due to his mother falling ill and being unable to breastfeed, Missander began to lose weight.

Upon his admission, Missander was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then transitioned to the medika mamba.

Rodlensky, who is 3 years old, accidentally fell into a pot of boiling water that was cooking over an open fire. Since his family resides three hours away from the clinic, he was admitted for inpatient care to ensure he receives daily dressing changes for his burns. Rodlensky’s family are farmers, cultivating beans, corn, and millet. He has one surviving sibling, and they live in a two-room home constructed from rocks, clay, and tin.  Unfortunately, basic amenities like running water and flush toilets are unavailable at their home. They must walk for an hour to access water. Rodlensky will remain at the clinic until his burns heal, undergoing daily dressing changes to promote his recovery.

Makenley, is 22-month-old boy who came to us when he weighed 19 pounds. His family traveled a long way to get here, walking, riding motorcycles, and using a machine for hours just to reach our clinic. Makenley’s dad works as a farmer, and his mom sells things to make money. They live in a simple house made of rocks, clay, and tin, without running water or a flush toilet. They have to walk for an hour and a half to get water.

When Makenley arrived, he was very sick. He had pneumonia, a fever, coughing, and signs of kwashiorkor, a serious condition caused by not getting enough food. We gave him special milk called F-75 to help him, and then he joined our Medika Mamba program to get better.

Benlendjy, is 15-month-old boy who weighed 13 pounds when he came to our clinic. His family traveled for an hour on a motorcycle to get here. Benlendjy is an only child, and his mom is eight months pregnant. His dad works as a welder to support the family. They live in a simple one-room home made of cinder block and cement, with a tin roof. Like many families in our area, they don’t have running water at home, so they have to buy the water they need. They have an outhouse for their bathroom. Benlendjy has been struggling with kwashiorkor, a severe form of malnutrition, on and off for three months. He also had a fever for three days. A few months ago, he was taken to another hospital for kwashiorkor, but his mom preferred traditional herbal treatment, which unfortunately didn’t help. Finally, she decided to seek medical help and brought Benlendjy to our clinic. When Benlendjy arrived, we started him on F-75 therapeutic milk and then moved to the Medika Mamba program.
