Since its beginning, RHFH has committed itself to delivering not just eternal hope, but tangible, life-sustaining services through its medical clinic and intensive malnutrition center. These facilities offer everything from prenatal care to emergency services, and intensive inpatient care for severely malnourished children. It’s a place where the community finds physical, relational, and spiritual healing.
The Challenge on Wheels
The terrain and logistical challenges in rural Haiti are formidable. The vehicles that serve RHFH—Toyota Land Cruiser trucks equipped with Goodyear 10-ply tires—are designed for rugged landscapes and tough conditions. Yet, even the sturdiest of vehicles face their limits.
Dirt roads turn to slick mud in the rainy season. Many times, the trucks have had close calls with falling into ravines and slipping off mountain sides. Worn tires make for dangerous trips. Roads frequently blocked by gang activity force detours through even less forgiving paths: rocky roads turning into narrow tracks at times, making the tires’ durability not just a necessity but a lifeline. One of the roads necessary to travel has an elevation of over 3000ft and takes at least 3 hours to inch up and down.
These vehicles are essential for carrying out the mission’s critical activities—from transporting patients to other hospitals, to delivering “medika mamba” for malnourished children, to ensuring that essential medications reach those in desperate need. Each month, thousands rely on the clinic for medical services that are otherwise unavailable in their remote locations.
The Need: 10 New Tires for $2200
Currently, RHFH faces a need to replace the tires on its two heavy-duty trucks to maintain and increase their operations’ safety and efficacy. The total cost to equip these vehicles with 10 new, durable tires is $2200, which breaks down to $220 per tire. This investment will significantly enhance the reliability of the trucks, ensuring that the staff and those they serve can travel with maximum safety and reach the most remote areas with the timely delivery of medical supplies and consistent food distribution.
Stories from the Road
The importance of these vehicles cannot be overstated. Zach’s Truck, a pivotal asset obtained in 2009, has become legendary in its service to the community. It transports supplies, aids in emergencies, and supports day-to-day operations critical to RHFH and the community. “Zach’s truck has been our steadfast companion,” says one staff member, underscoring its integral role not just in logistics, but in the hearts of those it serves. That truck has hauled patients, supplies, (and many of you!) through tough seasons or earthquake relief, hurricanes and floods, cholera, and now with current season of destabilization and violence.
