Journey to Recovery – Vierge (cancer)

My name is Vierge, a 64-year-old woman from Cazale, Haiti. I have spent my life in nurturing roles, raising seven children, supporting my family, and aiding those in need through my work at a local Cholera Treatment Center (CTC). My job involved witnessing daily miracles as people walked into the center on the brink of death, and walked out, their health restored. Helping them, feeding those who couldn’t afford a meal, filled my days with purpose and joy.

Then, suddenly, I found myself on the other side of care. I began feeling constant heat and pain on my right side. The discomfort led me to go to our clinic, where after some tests, I was diagnosed with uterine cancer. The news was a blow, not just emotionally but financially. My limited income from the CTC could never cover the high costs of cancer treatment.

The situation felt desperate. I had spent my life helping others, and now I was the one in urgent need of help. Cancer didn’t just threaten my life; it jeopardized my ability to be there for my family, to see my children and play with my grandchildren. The fear of not having enough money for treatment was as daunting as the disease itself.

However, hope came through the kindness of donors like you. The mission, supported by your generous contributions, provided the funds necessary for my hospital transfer and surgery. I underwent an operation to remove my uterus and the cancer, a procedure done through an incision in my lower abdomen. Despite the success of the surgery, the hospital’s limited capacity meant I could not stay long post-operation. The very next morning, I was sent home to recover.

Recovery was not easy. Living far from the hospital, I stayed with my sister in Port-au-Prince to attend follow-up appointments and dressing changes. It was a challenging time, but your support continued to shine through. The medication, the multiple hospital visits for dressings, and the care I received during this period were all possible because of your donations.

Two months after my surgery, I returned to work at the CTC. Being able to resume my duties was not just a return to normalcy; it was a victory over my circumstances and all due to the life-changing impact of your generosity.

Today, I am enjoying precious moments with my children and grandchildren, all thanks to the support from donors like you. You have not only saved a life but have ensured a grandmother can continue to love and lead her family.

Thank you for being a source of hope in Cazale. Thank you for the life you’ve returned to me. Every smile from my grandchildren is a reminder of your kindness. I pray for the continued success of our staff and supporters who transform lives every day. From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU SO MUCH.
