News Admits to the Rescue Center

ELISSON

Elisson is 4 years old and weighed 28 pounds whe admitted. He came to the clinic with his grandmother. His mother passed away several months ago from suspected tuberculosis, and his father, a farmer, grows beans, corn, and pumpkins to sell at local open-air markets for profit. Elisson lives with his grandmother and his only living sibling, a brother. Their home has stick walls and a tin roof. The family does not have running water or a flush toilet but uses an outhouse and travels an hour to find water from a local spring.

For several months, Elisson has been losing weight and experiencing difficulty breathing, which necessitated oxygen support. He has also had a high fever for over a month. When he came to the clinic, we weighed and measured him. He was -4SD for weight-to-height ratio according to WHO standards, which is considered severely malnourished. It took an 8-hour motorcycle taxi ride to bring him to the clinic. Upon arrival, he was initially given F-75 milk and later entered into the medika mamba program for further treatment. He required oxygen, isolation and is currently being treated for TB.

WOOD SHELSON

Wood Shelson is 16 months old and weighed 19 pounds when admitted. Due to the edema he lost weight and his lowest weight was 17 pounds. He arrived at the clinic with his mother. His father works as a taxi driver, and his mother earns money by buying items in bulk and reselling them for a profit. Wood lives with his mother, a sister, and a brother in a one-room home built from cinder blocks and topped with a tin roof. The family does not have running water or a flush toilet but uses an outhouse and relies on a nearby hand pump for water.  In recent weeks, Wood has been suffering from edema and, in the past few days, has developed diarrhea. He was -1SD for weight-to-height ratio according to WHO standards, along with 3+ edema, so he is considered severely malnourished. The day before he was admitted to the clinic, he had nothing to eat, and on the day of admission, he had some cornmeal with bean sauce. It took an hour-long motorcycle taxi ride to get him to the clinic. Upon arrival, he was immediately given F-75 milk and later enrolled in the medika mamba program for further treatment.

HOLENS

Holens is 5 months old and weighed 6 pounds when admitted. He came to the clinic accompanied by his mother. His father works as a motorcycle taxi driver. Their family shares a large group of homes with 9 other family members. Holens is an only child. The family lacks running water and a flush toilet, but they use an outhouse and travel an hour to a local spring for water.

For several months, Holens has been losing weight because his mom was ill and unable to breastfeed him. About a week before his admission to the clinic, he began to show signs of edema in his legs and feet. He was -4SD for weight-to-height ratio according to WHO standards, along with edema, so he is considered severely malnourished. On the day he was admitted, he had eaten some porridge, and the day before, he had only consumed some milk. It took a 45-minute motorcycle taxi ride to get him to the clinic. Initially, he was given F-75 milk, and later, he was enrolled in the medika mamba program for further treatment.

LOVE MICA

Love Mica is a sister of one of the other children in the Rescue Center.  The mother was homeless and did not have a place to stay with the children.  We admit Love Mica so that they family could stay together, and we could come up with a plan for their family. She has three living brothers and one that died the same day it was born. The family farms land and grows corn and beans.  They then take these items and sell them in open air markets for a profit. They traveled 3 hours by motocycle taxi to arrive at the clinic.

SCHNAYLIE

Schnaylie is almost 2 years old and weighed around 14 pounds when she was admitted. Due to the edema, from kwashiorkor, she lost 2 more pounds. She was -4SD for weight-to-height ratio according to WHO standards, along with edema, so she is considered severely malnourished. Both of her parents are alive; her dad lives in the Dominican Republic, and her mom lives with three other family members in a house made of rocks and clay with a tin roof. Schnaylie’s mom buys items like chicken bouillon and oil to resell for a profit. The family must walk an hour to fetch water, as they have no running water or flush toilets, not even an outhouse. Schnaylie had been sick for about two months and showed swelling from kwashiorkor. Before coming to the clinic, her mom tried local herbal remedies, giving Schnaylie a tea to drink and applying oil to her skin, but these did not help.

The family then traveled three hours on foot to reach the clinic. Schnaylie was started on F-75 therapeutic milk and later transitioned to medika mamba for further treatment.
