Today, we want to share a story that’s close to our hearts here at Real Hope For Haiti. It’s a story about two brave little ones, Chrisna, 7, and her baby brother, Jamesly, who’s just 17 months old. What they went through is something no child should ever have to endure, and yet, it’s also a story of resilience, hope, and the incredible difference your support makes every day.
It all started on a day that was already heavy with emotion. Their mom had to attend her grandmother’s funeral, so she left Chrisna and Jamesly in the care of their 14-year-old cousin. The cousin, trying to take good care of them, decided to make fried bananas—a special treat for the kids. But in a moment of misfortune, the pan of hot oil slipped, spilling onto the children. Chrisna suffered burns to her neck and stomach, while little Jamesly was burned on his face, leaving everyone fearing for his eyesight.
The family lives in a small, remote area about two hours from our clinic. It was late when the accident happened, and the family had no choice but to wait until the next morning to make the long journey to us. We can’t imagine how agonizing that wait must have been for their mom, knowing her children were hurt and needing urgent care.
When they finally arrived at our clinic, the sight of wounds and hearing the mom’s story, overwhelmed with worry and tears, broke our hearts. She was scared not only for the burns but also terrified that Jamesly might lose his sight because of the injuries to his face. We knew we had to act quickly.
We immediately took Chrisna and Jamesly in, providing the best care we could. But we also recognized that this family needed more than just medical treatment. So, we welcomed their mom and Jamesly’s twin brother, Jamesley, to stay with us too. It was important to keep the family together during this incredibly challenging time, giving them the emotional support they needed while we focused on healing the kids.
Here’s the part that fills us with joy: after 22 days of care, both Chrisna and Jamesly were able to return home, their burns fully healed. And the most wonderful news—Jamesly’s eyesight is completely fine! Their mom couldn’t stop smiling, filled with gratitude and relief. She told us how she had feared the worst but left our clinic with her children happy and healthy again.
Stories like this remind us why we do what we do and why your support is so vital. In a country like Haiti, where access to healthcare can be so difficult, especially in emergencies, your generosity makes all the difference. Because of you, we were able to be there for Chrisna and Jamesly when they needed us most.
Thank you for being part of our Real Hope For Haiti family. Your kindness and support help us bring hope and healing to families facing unimaginable challenges. We’re honored to have you by our side as we work to change lives here in Haiti, one child, one family at a time.
