Norsant, a 3 year-old boy, lives with his parents and siblings in a village, about an hour’s walk from the clinic. Life was already challenging for his family, but things got even harder when Norsant became seriously ill. He wasn’t gaining weight and was very weak, so his parents brought him to the clinic, where he was admitted to the nutrition center. He was diagnosed with severe malnutrition, classified as -3 and he also needed to be on oxygen.
Thanks to intensive treatment, Norsant’s condition improved. He gained weight, regained his strength, and had the energy to play and smile again. After several weeks of care, he was declared no longer malnourished and was able to return home with his family.
However, six months later, Norsant’s health began to decline again. His worried parents returned to the clinic, where he was admitted once more. This time, he weighed only 8.8 kg and had grade 2+ edema in his feet. He had fallen back into the -3 malnutrition category.
The medical team quickly started treatment, running tests to rule out complications and prescribing medication. In addition, Norsant was enrolled in the Medika Mamba-outpatient program.
To start, Norsant was given a one-week supply of Medika Mamba, to be consumed daily at home. His parents brought him to the clinic for weekly follow-ups. After the first week, encouraging signs appeared: his edema began to decrease, and his energy started returning.
Seeing his progress, weekly follow-ups continued, and with each visit, there was more good news. Over three months of monitoring, Norsant’s health steadily improved:
- The edema completely disappeared.
- His malnutrition level improved.
- His weight increased weekly.
Norsant’s recovery was a team effort. His parents’ unwavering dedication, the medical team’s care, and the education they provided about nutrition all contributed to his progress. Today, Norsant is thriving. He now weighs 10.9 kg, placing him in the median weight for his age. He is healthy, happy, and full of energy.
Thanks to the Medika Mamba program and the caregivers’ support, Norsant’s life has been transformed. His story is a testament to the power of community, commitment, and compassion in saving lives and giving children like him a brighter future.
