I’ve enclosed the general letter that I sent out to everyone. I hope you girls are both doing well. I got into a letter-writing mood and managed to get a lot of notes and letters done this week. It takes a lot of time to write to everyone, and I know it’s important—but I have to be in the right mood to get it done.
Well, guess what? It’s hot here. The afternoons are the worst—it’s almost unbearable to be outside. Things are sometimes hard for me here, but I know it’s much worse for others.
Well, another day has gone by, and I still haven’t finished this letter. It’s 2 p.m., and this is the first time I’ve been able to sit down today. My feet hurt so bad—they’re screaming at me to sit down. We had clinic today and saw about 37 children, all of whom were in bad shape. Most of them walked 4 to 5 hours just to get here. We’re getting low on food to give out—only about 4 to 5 days’ worth left.
This afternoon, some missionaries are coming over to visit. I made potato salad last night—glad I got that done! I’ve only managed to get 5 letters written today, and I’m about 2 weeks behind on answering mail. Dad said Licia would make a much better secretary than me—and she probably would! But I don’t see him out here writing notes 😊
Lori, I know you’ll be a better nurse than I am. When you girls get here, I’ll retire and just work in my garden.
How are classes going for you girls? Are you taking good notes in your missions classes? Have you studied Mary Slessor yet? I just finished reading her book—I loved it, and it really inspired me in my work here.
Dad has been working around the compound and learning new things. He loves helping with the well drilling and continues to work on learning Creole. Each morning, we pray together before work starts, and I keep picking up more and more words that I understand. I do my best to communicate, but I still need help getting the full story from patients. Throughout the day, people come to the gate with different illnesses, small cuts, scrapes, or burns. I’m glad I can help in a small way. I don’t have to speak the language well to help someone in need.
I miss you girls. Time is marching on, and soon we’ll get to see each other again. I love you both!
