Freedom from the Spirit of Fear
Fear is a thief. It sneaks in and robs us of our peace, our strength, and even our trust in God. It’s more than just a feeling—it’s a spiritual battle. The Bible tells us clearly: “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7). So why do we let fear speak so loudly in our lives?
Fear, at its root, is often a lack of trust in God. We fear what we cannot control, what we don’t understand, or what seems too overwhelming to handle. But Psalm 23 reminds us, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.” God is with us. His presence is greater than anything we face.
I’ve seen how fear can distort our thinking and drive us to make decisions based on panic, not peace. But as followers of Christ, we are not called to live that way. Jesus said in Matthew 10:28, “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear Him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” The only fear we’re called to carry is a holy, reverent fear of the Lord—a deep awe, respect, and honor for who He is.
Psalm 56:3-4 gives us a clear path: “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust and am not afraid.” We’re not called to pretend we never feel fear, but we are called to respond by trusting God when it rises up.
So how do we get free from the grip of fear?
- Call on the Lord – Start with prayer. Ask Him to save you—not just from sin, but from fear. He is Lord over fear, just as He is Lord over all.
- Speak the truth out loud – There’s power in declaring God’s Word. Try Psalm 27:1: “The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?”
- Repent and Replace – If you’ve let fear take root, confess it. Let go of bitterness or resentment toward people you fear, and ask God to replace it with love. “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear” (1 John 4:18).
- Praise and Worship – Praise breaks chains. When you worship God, fear has to flee. Begin thanking Him for who He is, and let your heart shift from worry to worship.
- Agree with others in prayer – Don’t go it alone. Find someone to pray with and bind the spirit of fear. Jesus said when two or three agree in His name, it will be done.
Remember Exodus 14:13—when the Israelites were facing an impossible situation, Moses said, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today.” God showed up for them. He will show up for you.
Let’s not forget the story of the twelve spies. Ten came back full of fear. Two, Joshua and Caleb, believed God’s promises. Fear led to 40 years in the wilderness. Faith would have led straight into the promise.
Or Peter—he walked on water until he looked at the storm instead of Jesus. He sank because fear replaced faith. But even then, Jesus reached out His hand and lifted him up.
If fear has been speaking loudly in your life, I encourage you today—don’t listen to it anymore. Start listening to the voice of God. Trust Him. Call on Him. Praise Him. He is still the God who calms the storm.
