Clinic Story-Dickenson

Dickenson is a 17-year-old young man that lives about 6 hours via foot and motorcycle taxi from our clinic. He lives with his parents and four brothers. His family depends mainly on manual labor to survive, and although they work hard, their income is often not enough to meet all their basic needs. Food insecurity is a regular part of life for many families in their community.

During a particularly difficult time for the family, Dickenson began to experience health problems. His legs started to swell, and he gradually lost his appetite. As the days passed, he became weaker and ate less. His family knew something was wrong, but access to medical care was limited.

At first, his parents sought help from a traditional healer, hoping it would help him recover. Unfortunately, his condition did not improve. As he continued to weaken, his family realized they needed additional help. Despite the challenges of travel and cost, they brought him to a hospital. After an evaluation, the medical staff referred him to our nutrition center for specialized care, where he was diagnosed with severe malnutrition.

When Dickenson arrived, he was very weak and in need of immediate care. Our medical team created a treatment plan that included medication, Medika Mamba, and therapeutic foods designed to help restore his strength and improve his nutritional health.

Dickenson remained at the nutrition center for four months while receiving treatment and monitoring. Over time, with consistent care and proper nutrition, he slowly began to regain strength. His recovery was gradual and required patience and dedication from both Dickenson and the medical team. He went from 66 pounds to 94 pounds.

His story is a reminder that malnutrition is often connected to larger challenges such as poverty, food insecurity, and limited access to healthcare. For many families, getting the right care at the right time can make a life-changing difference.
