New Admits to the Rescue Center

Samuel was six months old when he arrived at the RHFH Rescue Center weighing 14 lbs, admitted with kwashiorkor, fever, and watery diarrhea. His lowest weight dropped to 12 lbs. His family has already lost two children to kwashiorkor. His father farms and his mother sells street food, together earning $38 a month. They have no running water at home. Samuel stopped breastfeeding at three months when his mother became ill. His parents believed he had worms and was anemic. This was his first admission. He was started on F-75 milk and then on to medika mamba.

Loubens is a 10-year-old boy who was admitted to the Rescue Center weighing only 37 pounds and suffering from kwashiorkor and a cough. He is one of five children, with two sisters and two brothers. His father is a farmer, and his mother earns a small income by buying and reselling rice, beans, and corn.

The family lives in a simple two-room home made of rock and clay with a tin roof. They have no running water, use an outhouse, and walk an hour each day to collect water. Their average monthly income is just $66 USD.

Loubens and his family walked four hours to reach the clinic. He was started on F-75 therapeutic milk and is now transitioning to Medika Mamba as he begins his recovery

Andersley is a 13-year-old boy who lives with his paternal grandmother and aunt. His mother left him in their care when he was young, and his father, who lives in another country, supports him by sending money and calling occasionally.

One day, Andersley was asked to gather wood for cooking. While out, he met friends and climbed onto a house to pick guava. The roof was made of rotten wood, and it collapsed beneath him, causing a deep cut to his leg.

His family brought him to the clinic, where he was treated and told he would need daily wound care. Because they live far away, Andersley is staying nearby so he can receive regular dressing changes and proper care as he recovers.

Phanaika is a young girl weighing only 11 pounds who was admitted with kwashiorkor after about two weeks of illness. Her mother died when she was just one month old, and she now lives with her father, grandmother, one sister, and three brothers.

The family lives in a two-room home made of rock and clay with a tin roof. They have no running water and no outhouse, using a nearby piped water source. Her father is a farmer who grows beans, corn, and sweet potatoes, but the family’s average monthly income is only $58 USD.

Before admission, food was very limited. She had little to eat the day before and nothing the day she arrived. After a five-hour journey, she was admitted and started on infant formula and Medika Mamba.
