Healing as Covenant: Jehovah-Rapha, the Lord Who Heals
Exodus 15:22–27 (Focus on verse 25)
In Exodus 15, God reveals Himself to His people as Jehovah-Rapha—the Lord who heals. This moment is more than a miracle; it is the establishment of a covenant. God promises to keep His people free from the diseases that afflicted Egypt, contingent on their diligent obedience to Him. This covenant speaks not only to spiritual healing, but to physical healing as well.
God attaches His own mighty name to this promise, making it absolutely certain. Healing is not something God merely does—it is part of His nature. He restores health and sustains it, offering what Scripture calls divine health.
While sickness is not always the direct result of personal sin or disobedience, the fall of humanity is the underlying cause of disease in the world. Those who seek healing are invited to look to Jesus Christ, our sin-bearer, and to pursue renewed, transformed lives. Isaiah reminds us that by His wounds we are healed (Isaiah 53:4; 1 Peter 2:24).
God’s love often works to protect us from harm. If we desire His care, we must submit to His directions for living. Healing is one of the blessings that flows from an obedient, covenant relationship with God. To heal means to cure, repair, mend, and restore—and God delights in doing just that. He is a good God, and He desires only His best for us.
Our Response to the God Who Heals
First, God asks us to listen to Him.
He desires a people with hearing ears—ears attentive to His voice. God has always spoken to His people, and He still speaks today. We must cultivate a posture of listening:
- Through His Word
- Through His anointed servants
- Through the direct prompting of the Holy Spirit within us
Second, God calls us to do what is right in His sight.
He seeks not only listeners, but doers of His Word. Scripture urges us to take God’s truth to heart and act on it (James 1:22–25). Obedience opens the door to the fullness of His blessings, including healing.
Psalm 103 reminds us that God forgives all our sins and heals all our diseases. Even in weakness, His grace is sufficient (2 Corinthians 12:9). Healing may come in different ways, but it always flows from His goodness.
Jehovah-Rapha remains faithful. He is still the Lord who heals—body, soul, and spirit.
