At 57 years old, Absanvil knows that perseverance is often necessary to overcome life’s challenges. Living in the remote area of Haiti, nearly five hours away from our clinic, every visit for medical care requires incredible effort. Before the sun rises, Absanvil begins his journey on foot, walking for hours so he can arrive early enough to receive care.
A farmer by trade, Absanvil depends on his land to provide for himself. Life has not always been easy, but he has remained determined to care for his health. Each month, he faithfully makes the difficult journey to our clinic for medical follow-up and nutritional support.
Over time, our team noticed something concerning. Although Absanvil was receiving regular nutritional assistance, he was not gaining weight. His legs began swelling, and he appeared weaker with each visit. Concerned that something more serious was happening, our nursing team requested additional testing.
The results revealed severe anemia. Absanvil’s hemoglobin level was low, explaining his fatigue, weakness, swelling, and difficulty gaining strength.
With this new information, our medical team created a treatment plan specifically for him. Over the following months, Absanvil received medication, continued nutritional support, and close monitoring during each clinic visit.
Slowly, his health began to change.
At his most recent appointment, Absanvil’s hemoglobin level had increased to 12 —a sign that his body was recovering.
His body responded to the care he received. The swelling in his legs disappeared. His appetite improved. Little by little, his strength returned, and he began gaining weight again.
For our team, seeing Absanvil improve is a reminder of why this work matters. His story represents the many patients who walk long distances, face difficult circumstances, and still choose to seek hope and healing.
