A Mother’s Journey of Hope

In the remote mountain community of Eustache, 14-month-old Frislove lives with his mother, where access to healthcare is a constant challenge. The nearest medical care is an eight-hour walk away, and for many families, transportation is simply too expensive. When Frislove developed a high fever, his mother desperately hoped he would recover. Without money for a motorcycle taxi or a nearby health clinic, she relied on herbal remedies, praying they would help.

Instead of getting better, Frislove’s condition quickly worsened. He stopped eating, became dehydrated, and grew weaker with each passing day. Knowing she could not wait any longer, his mother made the difficult decision to carry her son to our clinic. The journey was too long to complete in one day, so she spent the night with someone living closer to the clinic before continuing on foot the next morning.

When they finally arrived at Real Hope for Haiti, our medical team immediately began evaluating and treating Frislove. After such a long and exhausting journey, his mother was relieved to know that her son was finally receiving the medical care he desperately needed.

Frislove’s story reflects the reality faced by countless families in rural Haiti. Distance, poverty, and limited transportation often delay lifesaving treatment for children who are seriously ill. What could be treated quickly becomes far more dangerous simply because medical care is so difficult to reach.
