Amy Carmichael was born in Ireland and lived from 1867-1951. After converting to Christianity in her teens, she briefly served as a missionary in Japan before settling  in South India. She traveled to India in 1885 and never returned home again, spending the remainder of her life serving the children of India.

She formed the Dohnavur Fellowship in Tinnevelly in 1901. Its purpose was to rescue young girls who were forced into temple prostitution. It was difficult and demanding work. In 1926 the Fellowship became an independent society with around 900 endangered girls and boys. After the children came into the care of the society, they were cared for, educated, and trained for lives of service.

Despite the obstacles she faced, the wickedness she encountered as a result of her work, and a crippling fall that rendered her disabled after a fall in 1931, her faith remained strong. She is remembered today by Christians worldwide because of the remarkable poetry, prose and letters she produced.
