No Skype. No internet. No smart phones. No cell phones. No cell phones. No text messages. No post office. The only communication was the mail that came and left the island one day a week. This was just how it was for missionaries here for many years. There was no choice in the matter. When you wanted to get news to a loved one, you wrote the letter and sent it off, hoping that they would get it in 2-3 weeks. Seriously. We never really thought anything about it. It was just one of the hard normalities that one must accept when answering the call to serve in Haiti. At times it was frustrating, but most of the time it caused us to greatly appreciate that one line of communication we had. Mail day was the best day of the week. You woke up with a smile on your face just anticipating who you might hear from. Since we had to drive 2 hours to pick up the mail, we would plan the week’s errands around this marvelous day. With a stack of letters in our hands, we would walk into the office like a child on Christmas morning dreaming of what we might learn from those we loved. These years built a solid belief in the treasured importance of communication.
We fully believe in the power of prayer. It is our main communication line to our Father. Whenever I approach My Savior to talk to Him, I try to go with that same anticipation that we felt on mail day. I long to share my life and concerns with Him and also desire to hear His ideas and guidance for me. Prayer is of much more value than Facebook or Twitter. It is a direct line of communication with our King. No waiting for the mail carrier or paying extra postage. Direct communication. With the Creator of the universe. Wow. That’s amazing!
Philippians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Not only are we able to ask for His help, He listens and answers. He doesn’t always respond to us in the way that we would like, but He responds in His timing and in His will. What a great God He is!
Mark 11:24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
Some of us might find this form of communication overwhelming. It’s kind of normal to feel a bit awkward and confused when first starting to pray. Jesus even knew that and gave us an example of a prayer. I think The Message puts it well for those of us just starting….
Matthew 6:7-13 The world is full of so-called prayer warriors who are prayer-ignorant. They’re full of formulas and programs and advice, peddling techniques for getting what you want from God. Don’t fall for that nonsense. This is your Father you are dealing with, and he knows better than you what you need. With a God like this loving you, you can pray very simply. Like this:
Our Father in heaven,
Reveal who you are.
Set the world right;
Do what’s best—
as above, so below.
Keep us alive with three square meals.
Keep us forgiven with you and forgiving others.
Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil.
You’re in charge!
You can do anything you want!
You’re ablaze in beauty!
Yes. Yes. Yes.
There should be no fear in prayer. God loves you with an amazing and comprehensible love. He accepts you as you are and longs to help and guide you through your journey. He’s so ready to talk to you. Don’t miss this chance to talk with your Heavenly Father.
