BERLINEDA
She is almost 4 years old and weighs 19 pounds. Her mama died last year and she has been increasing getting worse since then. She has not been able to walk in over a year as well. They get their water from a pipe system that is a 30 minute walk from their home. The father makes an average of $46US a month for his family. He traveled 1.5 hours by moto to arrive at the clinic. When asked why he thought his daughter was sick, he believes that is has something to do with the mother dying. He believe there is a curse that was on the mother and then went to the daughter after she died. She was started in the F-75 milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.
CLERSINE
He is 2 years old and weighs 17 pounds. His mama left him at his papa’s house several months ago and no one has seen her since. Papa is married to someone other than Clersine’s mama. The family lives in a 2 room home made of brush, rocks, and clay. They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even and outhouse. They get their water from a source that is about a 5 minute walk from their home. The papa is a farmer and grows bean and corn in his garden. Clersine has been showing signs of kwashiorkor for about 3 weeks now. He also has been passing lots of worms. Papa says that he will eat anything but when he is gone working during the day and does not see what he eats with his wife. He believe that neglect is causing him to be malnourished. It took them 3 hours to walk to the clinic from their home. He was started on the F-75 milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.
EDNER
He is almost 4 years old and weighs 18 pounds 12 ounces. His mama noticed that he began having signs of kwashiorkor about a week before she came. She was very worried about him, as this was the third time that this has happened in the last year. The family of 4 lives in a 1 room home made of rocks, clay and tin. They have lost one child due to illness. They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse. They get their water from a source that is about a 5 minute walk from their home. The mama and papa both work in their gardens and grow bananas and beans. It took his mama 2 hours to get her by moto and machine. They believe their child is malnourished due to lack of money to buy food. He was started on the F-75 milk and them graduated to the medika mamba.
LEONARDO
He is 9 years old and weighs 37 pounds. His mama rode on a difficult road for 4 hours on a moto to come to the clinic. He was biting and hitting her and was very upset that day. We all decided that we would have him be on the outpatient mamba program and he would do best with his mama caring for him. She returned home and tried for 2 weeks to get him to eat. She mixed that mamba in everything she could think of to get him to eat it even soup. The last few days before he came he had not had anything to eat. His mama began the 4 hour trip again to have him pass out on the way down. Those around her told her to return home he was going t die anyway and was not worth the trip. She continue and arrived here in the afternoon. She said before he was sick she would have to get up each morning before the sun was up to fix him food. That is how much he liked to eat 🙂 We hired staff just to care for him as he needed special care. We inserted an NG tube and began with the F-75 milk and then graduated him to the medika mamba. He is beginning to walk around some and is slowly improving. Thank God for loving mothers 🙂
MAGALIE
She was refereed to us for a short stay from Bread to the Nations. She is a former patient in there medika mamba program. Magalie became sick and was having problems breathing. Her legs and feet were swelling as well. When she got here her 02 levels were in the low 80’s and she was really struggling to breath. She was put on oxygen and given meds for several days. She returned home with her mama this week and is doing well.
TERISMA
He is 10 years old and weighs 41 pounds. Since being admitted he has lost 4 pounds of water weight from his kwashiorkor. He started out in the outpatient feeding program but began getting worse. His dad saw that he was swelling from kwashiorkor and he returned to the clinic right away. He believe that the family does not have enough food to feed everyone and that is why his son is this sick. The family of 6 lives in a 2 room home made of rocks, clay and tin. They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse. They get their water from a source that is a 2.5 hour walk from their home. The parents are both farmers and grow beans and corn in their garden. It took them 4 hours to get to the clinic by animal, traveling on mountain paths. The day he was admitted he had not has anything to eat and the day before a plate of rice. He was started on the F-75 milk and then graduted to the medika mamba program.
MIMOSE
She is 21 years old and weighs 83 pounds. She has been sick for about 2 years now. Her legs and feet started having swelling about 1 month ago and she has not been able to eat much. She and her husband have one child that is 4 years old. They live in a one room home made of rocks, mud and tin. They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse. They have a garden where they grow beans and corn. They bring in on average $22us a month for income for their family. Her husband cried when he knew that she would be staying here for awhile. he really loves her and just wants her to get better. He believes that she is this way due to a lack of food for many years. Both of their parents are dead and they do not live near any close family members. She was started on the F-75 milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.
