ORLANDO

He is 15 months old and weighs 12 pounds 5 ounces.  He was referred to us from Children’s Health Ministries.  His papa was killed in a car accident.  His mama is very ill and left Orlando with a neighbor several months ago.  The mother has not returned and the neighbor is unable to provide care for him.  In the past month he became increasing worse and developed mild kwashiorkor.  He was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.STEPHANIE

She is 3 years old and weighs 27 pounds.  Her mama and papa are both young and have abandoned her at the grandma’s house.  One grandma brought her to the clinic in December 2014.  She had milk kwashiorkor at that time and the grandma did not want to leave her for inpatient care before talking with the rest of the family.  Last week she became increasing worse and the family decided to admit her for inpatient care.  She was admitted with low glucose levels and has refused to eat or drink anything.  We inserted an NG tube so that we could give the F-75 therapeutic milk and medications.  Her grandparents are both farmers and grow beans, corn and grains in their gardens.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, but do have an an outhouse.    They get their water from a source that is about a 5 minute walk from their home.  The day she was admitted she has nothing to eat and the day before she had a glass of juice.  The family traveled 4 hours riding on a horse to arrive at the clinic.  Their average monthly income is around $89US.  She was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.

SABANIA

She is 2 years old and weighs 15 pounds 9 ounces. She was referred to us from Children’s Health Ministries. She has been showing signs of kwashiorkor for about 2 months now and also has been passing worms.  Her papa works from day to day doing different odd jobs.  Her mama buys items in bulk and resells them for a profit.  The family of 5 lives in a 2 room home made of tin, sticks and clay.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse.  They purchase their water from a vendor that is near their home.  The day she was admitted she had nothing to eat and the day before she had a plate of rice.  They traveled  for about 4 hours by motorcycle, and taxi to arrive at the clinic.  The families average monthly income is around $70US.  She was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program.
