New admits to the Rescue Center and ICU

ANDRY

He is 7 years old and weighs 25 1/2 pounds.  He has been following in our outpatient nutrition program for several months now.  He has a sister that is already in our inpatient program.  His weight has been decreasing for several months now and the papa asked if we could do inpatient care for him along with his sister who is already here.  He has the beginning signs of kwashiorkor as well.  Andry has 6 other siblings.  The family live in a one room home made of tin and sticks.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse.  They travel 30 minutes by foot to the nearest water source and carry it back home in 5 gallon buckets or gallons on their heads.   The parents are both farmers and grow corn and yams in their gardens.  The day he was admitted he had not had anything to eat and the day before he had a plate of millet.  When we asked his papa why he thought the kids were losing weight, he said they lack food.  The families average monthly income is around $166US.  They travels by foot for about 30 minutes to arrive at the clinic.  He was started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and then graduated to the medika mamba program and is doing well.aNDRY jAN (427x640)CARLINE

He is 5 years old and weighs 33 pounds.  He was following on our outpatient mamba program for a few months and has increasing lost weight and when he came in had a 105 temp and was unable to walk or stand up.  He had malaria that had been untreated for several weeks. He also been showing signs of kwashiorkor for about 3 weeks now.   His papa builds houses and his mama buys items in bulk to resell for a profit.  They also have gardens where they grow beans, corn and pumpkins.  The family of 5 lives in a 2 room home made of rocks, clay and tin.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse.  They get their water from a source that is about a 10 minute walk from their home.  The day he was admitted he had coffee and bread and the day before he had soup to eat.  The families average monthly income is around $22US a month.  His family thinks that he is sick with fever and malnutrition due to him having worms.  They traveled for 2 hours by motorcycle to arrive at the clinic.  He was started on treatment for malaria and started on the F-75 therapeutic milk and the graduated to the medika mamba program.

She is 8 years old and weighs 38 pounds.  She has been in our outpatient program for several months and lost 4 pounds this past month.  Her mama was very worried about her and ask if we could admit her to our inpatient program.  She has been having diarrhea, cough and cold for the past 2 weeks and just not feeling well.  Her parents are farmers and grow grains and beans in their gardens.   They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse.  The family has to walk 1 hour to get to the nearest water source.  The day she was admitted she has a banana and crackers to eat and the day before she has a plate of rice with bean sauce.  The family traveled 3 hours by foot and motorcycle to arrive at the clinic.  She continued on the mamba program and is recovering well.
