Words from Gretchen- (a letter to her family) 1997

First I want to thank you all for the kind acts you did for us while we were home-each kindness big or small is appreciated and remembered. As we go about our activities things remind us of our time together and we get joy from that. We love you all and miss you. Looks like we’ll be coming home about a year from now-to get my “baby” enrolled in college-where oh where has the time gone?

Hey it is hot here right now-over 100 everyday-some days the sweat just rolls down my legs in streams-our clothes are soaked by 8 or 9 each morning. We get used to it as long as we can sleep at night we can handle it. Some nights it seems like the fan just blows the hot air around with no cooling effect.

Zach and Casey have worked on a well here on our property, for three weeks now, it is almost outside our back door. This whole week they pulled up the steel pipe and replaced it with PVC pipe. One day a plastic pipe accidentally dropped 81 feet and shattered. It took hours and hours to get the pieces back out. Zach cried, Casey was in daze and another missionary left the scene. They left it alone for a day but are back working today and hopefully be operating in 3 or 4 more days. After that they are going to begin drilling up in the mountains.

Last Saturday I had a conference for midwives in the area and we had 20 present-one of them was new. After the session she told me she lived in the Tapio area (in the mountains). She has 2 years of organized health education. Just the night before I told God I needed to find someone in that area to train to oversee the 800 kids in our feeding center. I could see it was going to be difficult for our local staff to find time to do it because we were so busy. Isn’t it just like God -He sent someone who was already trained, young and energetic. I had her come back on Tues so I could talk to her at length. I hired her and she will start teaching this week. As they drill a well at each of the feeding stations we will introduce hand washing.

This is the peak of garden season in certain areas here. Every day people bring us gifts of all sorts of fruit and vegetables: bananas, pineapples, avocados-lots of avocados and watermelons. We have melon every meal and citron (lime) for the most refreshing drink you can imagine. Milk straight from Elsie and other strange things you have never heard of and I’m not always sure what to do with-some very strange looking. You see we’re blessed. I’m blessed anyways just working here. The longer I work here the more I get to know people and learn from them.

Licia is fine-working at the clinic and feeding programs with me and in the kitchen at night serving supper and cleaning up afterwards. She seems to enjoy that she is a people person and likes to be out among them every chance she gets. She is looking forward to going home in December for a visit with Lori and all. Much love to each of you!

Her smiling face is what I see. Her kindness that came so naturally. Her laughter was special. Her love for everyone. I miss my friend…..
