Anaelle is 20 months old. She has been following in the outpatient malnutrition program for multiple months, however, her nutritional status has not been improving. Unfortunately, her father would not consent to inpatient treatment until last week. Her weight for height is 6 standard deviations below the average for Haitian children. Her mother left a couple weeks after she was born. Her aunt and father take care of her.
Ariana is a 12 month old baby girl who was admitted last week with kwashiorkor and severe acute malnutrition. Her father lived in the Dominican Republic and recently returned to Haiti. Her mother moved to the Dominican Republic 1 month ago. Her grandmother has been caring for her most recently. She had severe diarrhea and vomiting, but thankfully this has resolved and she is improving every day.
Ludenie is a 4 year old girl who was admitted with severe malnutrition. Her weight for height is 4 standard deviations below the average for Haitian children. She was in the outpatient malnutrition program shortly after her birth, but then her father got a job and was no longer able to bring her to appointments. Her mother broke her leg in a motorcycle accident years ago and is scared to ride on a moto.
Witchina is a 12 month old baby girl who was admitted kwashiorkor and severe acute malnutrition. She had whole body edema on admission. She has scabies and associated skin sores. She is doing much better now. She developed edema after her mother stopped breastfeeding. Her father does not participate in her care. She has 5 half siblings.
Nerphiou is a 12 year old boy who was abandoned at clinic last week. He is severely malnourished- BMI of 11 and he has had a cough for several months. We suspect that he has tuberculosis. He also has moderate severe anemia and a positive screen for sickle cell anemia. Please pray that Nerphiou will respond well to treatment and that we can get him the care he needs for the sickle cell anemia. And please pray that we will be able to find his mother and reunite her with her son.
