New Admits to the Rescue Center

Guistav

He is 20 months old and has the beginning signs of kwashiorkor. His weight for height is 3 standard deviations below the average for Haitian children.  He has 1 brother and 1 sister, and he is the youngest. The family of 6 lives in a 4 room home made of rocks, clay and tin.  They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse.  They get their water from a river that is about a 30 minute walk from their home. His mother stopped breastfeeding him 2 months ago.  He began losing weight and then developed kwashiorkor.  He was started on the F-75 Therapeutic Milk and then graduated to the Medika mamba program.

Love Mica

She is 5 years old and came to the clinic with severe kwashiorkor. She also has been having diarrhea for a month. She has 5 living siblings and one that died as a newborn. The family of 8 live in 1 room home that they rent. They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse. They purchase their water from a vendor near their home. Her papa is a farmer and grows beans, corn and bananas in his gardens. His mom buys items in bulk and resells them to make a profit. She is just eating one meal a day. They traveled one hour on a motorcycle in arrive at the clinic. She was started on the F-75 Therapeutic Milk and then graduated to the Medika mamba program.

Judens

He is 20 months old and was admitted with severe kwashiorkor. His mama stopped breastfeeding him 3 months ago. He began to develop edema about 3 weeks before coming to the clinic. His aunt took him to an herbal medicine doctor for a week and his kwash got worse, so she came to the clinic with him. He has 4 livings sisters and 4 siblings that have died. They died from fever, kwashiorkor and one died the same day it was born. The parents are separated, and the mom lives with the kids in a one room home made with sheets and a tin roof. They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, not even an outhouse. They purchase their water from a vendor that is near their home. Merline

She is 7 months old and weighs 10 pounds. Her weight for height is 3 standard deviations below the average for Haitian children. Her mama died when she was 2 months old and has been in her papa’s care. He works during the day and Merline stays at a cousins house. At night she stays with her dad. Her dad is a framer and grows beans, corn and sweet potatoes in his gardens. The family lives in a 2 room home made of wood and a tin roof. They do not have running water at their home or a flush toilet, but do have an outhouse. They get their water from a source that is a 2 hour walk from their home. She was started on the F-75 Therapeutic Milk and then graduated to the Medika mamba program

Mirlene had been following in the clinic for malnutrition but abandoned her treatment.  She returned 6 months later with kwashiorkor, fever, cold and diarrhea. She has 4 siblings and one that has died of kwashiorkor.
